Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced that France will implement a “safeguard clause” to ban the import of food from outside the European Union that has been treated with pesticides or plant protection products not authorized in Europe.

The initial measure will apply to the pesticide thiacloprid, which was banned due to its negative impact on bees. However, it is expected that this restriction will be extended to other products. France will also seek to ensure that the European Union adopts the same principle.

Attal’s announcement is part of a package of measures to support farmers. The decision seeks to address farmers’ complaints about the “unfair competition” they face due to imports that are not subject to the same health, environmental or labor standards they are required to meet.
