Cloudflare has blocked AI content crawlers after launching a plan through which publishers will be able to charge for the use of this material.

The company, “specializing in web security and performance,” implemented the measure in response to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) crawlers. In this regard, “from now on, these bots that collect information from websites to train AI models are blocked by default, unless the website owners give explicit permission,” as reported by CNBC.

With this payment plan, Cloudflare makes clear its goal of protecting its users from the “unauthorized” use of its content by technology companies that train AI systems. In this regard, the platform “also began asking new customers whether they want to allow these trackers to access their sites.”

Cloudflare’s pilot program “allows certain media outlets and platforms to charge for access to their content. With this model, publishers can set a price and decide which types of AI companies can pay to use their content. Interested companies can view the rates and choose whether to accept.”

Participants in the pilot project include The Associated Press, Time, The Atlantic, BuzzFeed, Reddit, Sky News, Pinterest, among others.
