Just as they empty people’s bank accounts, steal personal data, and impersonate others, hackers are finding new ways to affect sectors such as industry, healthcare, manufacturing, education, telecommunications, and supply chains, among others.

Internet criminals are using increasingly sophisticated methods, including the use of AI that allows for virtually imperceptible impersonation, to breach the protective barriers of individuals and businesses, as well as universities, oil facilities, healthcare centers, manufacturers, and more.

Among the most common attack methods is the introduction of malware into both personal and corporate computers to steal information. But cybercriminals also commit crimes through phishing, asset theft, card cloning at points of sale, malicious applications, and cyberespionage.

Losses from cyberattacks are in the millions. Beyond companies seeing their data exposed or simply losing it to hackers, there’s also the theft of assets, money in bank accounts that ends up in the hands of cybercriminals, data ransom demands, and operational disruption.

Solving all of this comes at a cost. In this sense, some projections of losses from cyberattacks this year point to more than $10.5 trillion.

The theft, considered one of the largest in the history of cryptocurrencies, was executed by cybercriminals at the time when the executives were transferring the passwords from the cold wallet to a hot wallet connected to the Internet.

Cold wallets are among the safest. The theft was unthinkable. However, the hackers managed to steal the €1.3 billion with a clever move. They created a fake interface to impersonate the real wallet management platform used by Bybit.

The company has pointed out: “This fake website had verified addresses and URLs, which made no one suspicious. When everyone who had to sign the transaction did so, the hackers diverted the funds to an unknown location.”

Initial investigations point to the North Korean group Lazarus, which, according to Chainalysis, “has been responsible for approximately 35 % of all stolen funds in 2024, with a total of $800 million in cryptocurrencies stolen in macro operations.”

Some security recommendations that do not lose validity include:

Strong passwords

Access to the different platforms of daily use is done through a password. On some platforms, it has a validity period; but even if it has not expired, it is advisable to change it as a measure to reinforce data security and prevent sophisticated cybercriminals from accessing your personal information or your credit and debit cards.

Updating your apps

If you’ve received a message that an update is available, first check that it’s a genuine notification from your provider’s app store. Then, install the update to protect the sensitive information you store and share in your apps.

Common sense when faced with malicious messages

Receiving messages, emails, notifications with spelling mistakes, without the logo of the company that is supposedly trying to communicate with the user, as well as the use of language that does not correspond to regular contacts, should alert people to a possible scam attempt. It is essential, if possible, not to open or respond to such communications until you confirm with the sender that it is a genuine message and not a phishing scam.

Beware of “too good” offers

Incredible promotions, which are often called “too good”, can hide a scam for the customer. The best thing in these cases is to make sure that the brand is really offering very good offers or discounts before entering the card details and placing merchandise in the shopping cart.

Can you avoid falling for a scam?

It is advisable that the customer carefully reads the fine print on each portal, digital store or platform where they wish to buy or join in order to know the rules of use, security and complaint mechanisms, whether for breach of contract or in the case of a scam. In addition, it is essential to know which are the local consumer protection agencies as well as the legal bodies and free telephone lines to report and receive assistance. It is recommended to keep the names, telephone numbers, emails and addresses of these agencies in a personal diary, so that if necessary, they can be contacted quickly.

When entering a website on the Internet, it will no longer be enough to use Google’s password manager.
As an extension to the implementation of tokens ten years ago, the credit card issuing company now takes another step towards controlling electronic fraud.

The company would be working on how to replace traditional security measures, such as passwords, with biometric data such as fingerprint or facial scanning.

The company has highlighted the importance of protecting the security of online credit card payments, as they estimate that this type of crime could exceed US$91 billion in 2028.

Hacker attacks are becoming more sophisticated and targeting websites with one-time password systems, as is the case in India. According to Mastercard, “these passwords, which retailers and banks send to consumers to authenticate their identity, are increasingly vulnerable to scammers.”

Hence, the credit card issuer has thought about a partnership with banking entities and payment service providers globally with the aim of replacing these “one-time passwords with a token based on the biometric information of the users.” consumers.” The service was launched last week in India, through a partnership with PayU and banks such as Axis Bank Ltd.

Tokenization will be used to attack the problem that “if the data was exposed and someone accessed it, they could use it.”

Mastercard aims to tokenize all e-commerce transactions in Europe by the end of the decade.

Once it has been activated, there will be no need to use the password and two-factor verification again. Simply, the user will verify their identity by unlocking the phone or computer using a fingerprint, facial recognition or a local PIN.

Social networks have become an important part of everyday life for millions of people around the world. However, experts warn that the entertainment provided by these platforms can sometimes make users forget something as fundamental as their privacy.

Every time a post is shared or a photo or video is uploaded, a new link is created between users’ personal data and the Internet. This link is used by cybercriminals to make them victims of ‘phishing’ and ‘malware’ and get hold of personal data. In addition to being able to use your accounts and data for other activities of very doubtful legitimacy.

For this reason, Kaspersky experts share a series of tips to establish a safer relationship with social networks, which begins with a phrase of common sense: ‘Think before you share’. “Anything you share on the Internet will be very difficult to eliminate. In fact, 74 % of Spaniards mistakenly believe that they can completely eliminate their presence on the Internet,” they explain from Kaspersky, citing data from the recent study ‘Right to Oblivion’ published by the company itself.

This first step, which consists of having a personal filter and making the decision not to share certain information, such as home address or personal telephone number, is essential. In addition, experts remind that users should never share anything that contains a QR or barcode, such as tickets to concerts or plane or train tickets.

Private browsing and configuration of social networks settings

On the other hand, Kaspersky urges you to browse the Internet privately. “When visiting any website, an analysis code is activated to count the visitors. Generally, they belong to companies such as Google or Facebook, who then use this information to offer you ads based on your interests,” the company details.

For this reason, if the user wants to prevent them from collecting this information, they can activate the incognito browsing mode, although experts clarify that it is not as secure as is usually thought, since it filters certain information, “but not all”. Another solution is to install the private browsing of the cybersecurity product that the user uses on their devices.

Likewise, cybersecurity experts recommend configuring social networks for greater security. Although many people are not aware of it, social networks offer various settings to determine what information is available and for which users. In addition, in most cases, the user can hide his profile in the search engine so that other people cannot tag him, write him messages or harass him.

At this point, Kaspersky offers the ‘Privacy Checker’ tool, which has useful information to maintain privacy on social networks such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp or Twitter, among others.

Delete inactive accounts and spot scams

Experts also encourage deleting unused accounts. Most people have some accounts that they haven’t used for a long time, but only some of them are automatically deleted. “Most of them are still there, saving information, images and personal data that could be leaked at any time. Therefore, it is a good idea to delete the profiles that you do not use, since, through old accounts, cybercriminals can access your data,” they add.

Finally, cybersecurity specialists encourage detecting scams in order to avoid them. Phishing scams through social networks like Instagram are becoming more and more common. Some of the most used methods are private messages with malicious links, fake influencer accounts, fraudulent giveaways, or even fictitious phishing emails that they use to steal data or take over accounts.

For this reason, they explain that the greatest precaution that the user can take is not to trust any profile that they do not know or that may be false. In addition, experts insist on the importance of changing passwords often and not using the same ones on all social networks.

“It is common to be more cautious when making a payment or management online, but privacy in social networks is an aspect that, on many occasions, is wrongly left aside. For this reason, Kaspersky warns users that they must be especially careful when sharing information to protect your data through simple steps like these,” concludes Marc Rivero, Senior Security Researcher at Kaspersky.

The malware is capable of accessing text messages, stealing web browser cookies and taking screenshots on infected Android devices. MaliBot is also capable of spreading “through hijacking SMS capabilities to send malicious messages to other users.”

But the trickiest part is that malvare can spread by bypassing all “multi-factor authentication” protections. According to Check Point cyber security researchers it has become the third most frequent malvare for Android users.

Check Point Research Vice President Maya Horowitz noted that “While it’s always good to see law enforcement succeed in taking down cybercrime groups or malware like FluBot, it unfortunately wasn’t long before new mobile malware took its place”.

In addition to MaliBot, the most common Android malware in the month of June is AlienBot, a virus that allows remote attackers to inject malicious code into legitimate financial applications, access sensitive information in accounts and gain control of the device.

The other most prevalent Android malware in June was Anubis, which is a banking Trojan dating back to 2016 and continues to be an active threat.

Protection measures for users

It is very important that users are alert to any strange messages, which is why consumers should be aware of:

Any text message that asks you to click on a link, as this is one of the most common ways of delivering mobile malware.

It is important that application downloads are made from trusted sources such as the Google Play Store.

It is recommended not to install applications from developers that only offer basic information, it could be a sign that the application could be a burning profile to distribute malware.

The passwords ‘12345’ and ‘111111’ are some of the most widely used in certain regions of Europe, which places them among the most vulnerable and easy for cybercriminals to crack, taking no time at all.

The password manager NordPass published a list of the 200 most common passwords on the Internet. To do this, in collaboration with independent researchers specializing in cybersecurity incidents, they analyzed a 4TB database from 50 countries.

In the first place, NordPass reported that Russia is in the first position of the countries most affected by data leaks, followed by the Czech Republic, France, Germany and the United States.

In addition to studying which are the most common, the company determined the number of users who use them and the time it takes for cybercriminals to decrypt them.

In general terms, the most used worldwide are ‘123456’, ‘123456789’, ‘12345’, ‘qwerty’, ‘password’, ‘12345678’, ‘111111’, ‘123123’, ‘1234567890’ and ‘1234567’, which cybercriminals take less than a second to decipher.

On the contrary, in the last positions of the most used passwords, ‘qazxsw’, ‘456789’, ‘232323’, ‘999999999’, ‘qwerty12345’, ‘qwaszx’, ‘1234567891’, ‘456123, ‘444444’, ‘qq123456 stand out. ‘ and ‘xxx’ (with times between minus one and minus two seconds).

In the last year, viruses have increased due to hacking on mobile phones. One of the most popular is known as ransomware, a modality that prevents users from accessing the information on their device and threatens to destroy it if they do not cancel a ransom within a specified time.

It is important for users to be clear that ransomware “consists of the criminal encrypting the data and requesting a ransom through a message or pop-up window, carrying out what is called virtual hijacking.“

Cybercriminals indicate that the victim will not be able to recover their data, or enter their system unless they cancel the ransom, which is generally requested in some type of cryptocurrency because it limits the tracking and makes the payment practically anonymous.

This anonymity process is possible due to the “cryptocurrency mixing or tumbing services that mix funds from different wallets, washing the cryptocurrency that makes it difficult to track transactions”, which makes it easier for cybercriminals extort money from their victims.

However, the payment of said ransom does not guarantee that the victim can unlock their device or access their files, therefore, it is recommended not to pay any ransom.

Common crimes

Hackers use different methodologies to attack their victims. Taking advantage of the fragility of the equipment to introduce malware, another way is to obtain the credentials to access the equipment “with administrator privileges through deception, procedural weaknesses, vulnerabilities in the software or the use of bad design practices such as hard-code of passwords.”

A very simple and common way for cybercriminals is to deceive users with so-called social engineering techniques such as fake emails. They also use social media and instant messaging channels. As well as the “method known as drive-by download and watering hole, which consist of directing victims to previously infected websites, downloading the malware without them knowing it.”
