She has signed an alliance with the other political parties to begin her presidential term.

Opposition candidate Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, 71, is a doctor by profession and “has promised to work to make our wealth accessible to all our people.”

Geerlings-Simons belongs to the National Democratic Party. Her running mate, Gregory Rusland, of the Surinamese National Party, will serve as vice president. “Both secured the support of 34 members of the National Assembly, the exact number needed for election in the first round.”

The president-elect, who will take office on July 16, declared: “I will use all my knowledge and strength to make our wealth available to all our people.” She added that she is aware of the responsibility ahead: “an even greater responsibility for being the first woman to hold this position. I don’t need many words. I thank you, and we will get to work.”

As background on Geerlings-Simons’s political career, it is worth mentioning that she served as president of the National Assembly of Suriname between 2010 and 2020. She was the second woman to hold that office, and in 2024 she was elected leader of the NDP, founded by the late former president Desi Bouterse.

The deputies have thus amended five laws related to the country’s energy sector, including the electricity regulation, which regulates the useful life of nuclear reactors.

After the Fukushima disaster in 2011, the Japanese authorities introduced a series of safety standards that limited the life of the reactors to 40 years, initially, and to 60 in the event that the reactors are subjected to a series of maintenance measures. and improves.

However, the new measure could extend this period by discounting the period of time that these reactors are not used, according to information from the Kiodo news agency.

In addition, under the new reactor regulation law, the country’s Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) will check the condition of reactors and facilities at least every 10 years after three decades of operation to ensure the safety of the installations.

“These reactors will not be operational unless they pass NRA reviews every 10 years and get approvals,” Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura told a news conference.

With this proposal, the Government seeks to respond to the shortage of energy supply through atomic energy as the main source. Faced with the energy crisis, the Executive has asked citizens on various occasions to take measures to limit their electricity consumption.

“I confirm the Government’s will not to abandon workers, retirees and companies,” Prime Minister Mario Draghi said during a meeting at the Chigi Palace with labor unions, according to the newspaper Corriere della Sera.

The Council of Ministers approved this Tuesday the report presented by Draghi and the Minister of Economy, Daniele Franco, to ask Parliament for “authorization to resort to debt for a total amount of 14,300 million euros in 2022“.

On the other hand, the founder of the 5 Star Movement (M5S), the comedian Beppe Grillo, would have threatened the party’s leader, Giuseppe Conte, with leaving the formation if the two-term limit is repealed in the face of the early elections that will take place on September 25 after the resignation of Draghi as head of the Executive.

The vote will be the first held in the autumn in the country’s history, and Draghi will remain as caretaker prime minister until a new government takes office.

The government has repeatedly said that cryptocurrencies will play a role in the country’s broader post-Brexit strategy to increase economic competitiveness. In April, the UK Treasury, the government’s financial arm, announced a set of initiatives to help turn the country into a global crypto hub.

The announcement promised new rules that would allow consumers to use stablecoins for payments with confidence.

The new bill also establishes a “tax rate of 13 % for Russian companies and 15 % for foreign ones on income taxed from digital assets.”

The rule passed the first link to become law. According to the bureaucratic procedures of the Russian state, the legal norms must be approved in the first instance by the parliament in the lower house, then they must be discussed and sanctioned by the upper house and later be endorsed by the president of the republic.

With the approval of the project, it constitutes a transformation in the way of seeing digital assets by the government of Vladimir Putin, who are approaching cryptocurrencies as a consequence of the economic situation resulting from the war with Ukraine.

As it will remember, the Central Bank of Russia at the beginning of the year tried to implement a “general prohibition” of digital currencies in the country.
The standard establishes that all devices will have a USB-C port with the purpose of “limiting the toxic waste of thousands and thousands of cables of various formats, and defending the right of consumers, forced for now, to accumulate various chargers.“

Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for Industry, stressed that the agreement was reached after nine months of negotiations, which in his opinion means “that we can move quickly when there is a political disposition.” He also indicated that the general interest of the European Union has prevailed.

The legal agreement must be formally ratified by the European Parliament, as well as by the 27 states of the block, before it can enter into force.

Sustainable products for the EU

In an official statement, the European Parliament explained that these legal regulations are part of a broad effort being made by the eurozone to obtain more “sustainable” products, reduce electronic waste and make life easier for consumers.

With the use of the universal charger, users will not need different cables to charge their new devices since they can use the same charger for all “small and medium portable electronic equipment.”

The Parliament also highlighted that the charging speed will be “harmonized for devices that support fast charging, allowing users to charge their devices at the same speed with any compatible charger”.

For his part, MEP Andrey Kovatchev indicated that the regulations will make life easier for consumers in the eurozone and improve the environment. “It’s time to put an end to the bundles of cables that we all have in our drawers, and reduce about 11,000 tons of electronic waste per year,” he affirmed.

The figures that the EU manages indicate that they “spend a total of about 2,400 million euros (about 2,800 million dollars) annually on cables and adapters to charge their mobile devices.”

Defeat for Apple

When the project was presented, the technological giant Apple presented its disagreement, saying that it was “hugely disproportionate to any problem that could be perceived”, in addition to limiting the “options of European consumers by removing older and cheaper models from the market”. The company defends its lightning connection and charging technology.

For 2009, the European Commission promoted agreements with technology companies to voluntarily adopt the reduction of cables. however, it failed to convince Apple. The company considers that the “adoption of a single charger is a brake on innovation.”

With the approval of the norm, MEP Alex Agius Saliba assured that the law must be applied equally to all, therefore “If Apple (…) or any other wants to market its products, abd sell them in our internal market, it will have to follow the rules and their device must have a USB-C port,” he said.

The proposals were presented by deputy Cenobia Vargas, last August, and independent assemblyman Gabriel Silva in September 2021.

The commission is analyzing both legislative proposals in order to select one of them or combine them and draft the final proposal of the commission, which would be sent to the Assembly for review.

The National Assembly of Panama reported through the instant messaging Twitter that a subcommission was created to unify the criteria of bill 696, which regulates “the use of cryptocurrencies as payment methods and everything related to blockchain technology in Panama and 697, Crypto Law: what makes Panama compatible with the digital economy”.

Scenario of cryptocurrencies

The legislative proposals differ in their approach to the regulation of digital currencies in the country. The proposal presented by Deputy Vargas, known as Bill 696, refers to the regulation of “bitcoin and ether”. And it includes other currencies in the regulation such as the “tether stable currency”.

Vargas also refers to “other types of tokens, such as NFTs (non-fungible tokens) or the 7even Utility Token (7UT)”, highlighting that “7UT would be an excellent means of payment for Panamanian businesses.”

For his part, Assemblyman Silva explains in his Bill 697 the potential that the regulation of cryptocurrencies “bitcoin and ether, and admitting them as a means of payment” would have. The deputy also explains in the project the opportunities that investors and entrepreneurs can have with the regulation of cryptocurrencies.

Currently, both Vargas and Silva are defending their respective proposals and answering each and every one of the doubts or questions from their colleagues within the commission. The latter will present its conclusions to the National Assembly so that it proceeds to discuss the project presented again, later they will proceed to its deliberation and vote.

If the project manages to advance and obtain a favorable result, it will be issued to the President of Panama, who will have the responsibility of definitively approving or rejecting the Law.

The vote was reserved for the EU parliament to send the proposal with the potential modifications for discussion with the members of the Council of the European Union and the European Commission, but it was suspended after the presentation of a new draft that contemplates a provision to limit cryptocurrency mining based on proof-of-work (PoW) mechanisms.

Stefan Berger, president of the Economy Committee and rapporteur in charge of that vote, asked for more time to elucidate the new provisions. The parliamentarian expressed through his social network Twitter: “The EU Parliament vote on MiCA will be canceled at my request (…). As rapporteur, it is essential for me that the MiCA report is not misunderstood as a de facto ban for Bitcoin.”

The rapporteur did not explain when the vote could take place and did not indicate a tentative timetable for the decision of the expected European crypto regulation.

Environmental impact of crypto

The new MiCA draft includes a provision that aims to restrict the use of energy-intensive cryptocurrencies, particularly referring to digital currencies based on PoW networks such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. If this provision is approved, it would come into force in 2025 and would impact the different companies that offer services with PoW cryptocurrencies.

It is important to note that the controversial provision of the regulatory framework refers to the progressive “concerns about the environmental impact of mining assets such as bitcoin, an issue that has been in vogue among regulators in countries around the world in recent months.”

The assembly members of the European Union and the politicians of several member countries such as Sweden, Germany and Spain, have been pressing, since November last year, to ban “proof-of-work mining due to energy concerns. Other officials such as the vice president of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), Erik Thedéen, also support this request.
