Members of the German parliament are studying new mechanisms, such as the Law on Assistance against Violence, to provide protection for women and girls.

The German Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, Lisa Paus, indicated that the cabinet approved the proposal for this law after it was admitted that Germany has a problem with gender violence.

The objective is to guarantee assistance to women and girls and the defense of their human rights. Free counselling for victims of violence is also contemplated. “The federal states would have the obligation to provide sufficient places in shelters and counselling for women. Currently, there is a lack of about 14,000 places in shelters for women and their children in Germany.”

Prevention through education and work with aggressors is very important. “There are also attempts to improve communication between agencies such as the police, youth assistance offices, the judicial system, and nurseries and schools.”

The delays in approving the law stem from problems between members of the previous government in reaching a consensus. The current cabinet is seeking approval before the early elections, scheduled for February 2025.
