For this reason, countries such as Mexico, Chile and Argentina are interested in a model for the region, called LATAM GPT, which generates and processes texts in Spanish and Portuguese.

Together with other countries in Latin America, these nations are working to make a local AI model a reality, “designed specifically to meet the needs and challenges of the region”, making the most of “the capabilities and knowledge of the countries involved to develop a tool that can help solve problems and take advantage of opportunities in areas such as the economy, education, health and public management”.

Among the benefits of LATAM GPT, an improvement in the automation of processes and tasks is expected. Also, greater efficiency in decision-making; improvements in access to more accurate and up-to-date information and knowledge; and the strengthening of innovation and competitiveness in the region.

Each country participating in this initiative contributes its own strengths and experiences. Each has specific roles. For example, Mexico is in charge of leadership in the coordination and development of the project. Chile contributes experience in AI and machine learning. Argentina contributes in the collection and processing of data, and Brazil provides support in the integration of the tool with existing systems.

In the fourth quarter of 2023, the frequency of aircraft, calculated in terms of paid passenger-kilometres (RPK), reached 98.4 % of the levels of the same period four years ago. IATA, which brings together 320 airlines representing 83 % of world air traffic, said in its monthly statistics that this translates into a “strong recovery” by the end of the year.

Border closures and other travel restrictions imposed since March 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, had devastating effects on passenger air transport, which fell that year to 34.2 % compared to the 2019 level, according to the agency.

The recovery did not come until 2021, when 41.6 % of the pre-pandemic level was reached, and in 2022, with 68.5 %.

“The strong recovery from the pandemic continued into 2023,” said IATA Director General Willie Walsh, quoted in a statement. This augurs a “return to normal growth patterns by 2024. The recovered health of the travel industry is good news.”

The activity was again boosted by domestic routes, which in 2023 reached 103.9 % of their 2019 RPK, according to IATA. The trend accelerated with the end of movement restrictions in China, after three years of stringent measures, where domestic flights reached 107.1 % of 2019 levels.

Latin American Airlines posted the strongest year-on-year performance of all regions, with a 2.0 % increase in demand in 2023 compared to 2022 (+1.9 % for international operations).

During next March 22 and 23, the event called CiberForum will be held in virtual format in Mexico, which aims to disseminate the new technologies existing in the market to face the digital risks presented by companies.

In the event, more than 40 specialists will refer to the best practices and the different strategies that experts apply to combat and prevent the different cyber attacks, they assure that this problem, although “it cannot be avoided, it can be prevented and combated with strategic”.

The companies MercaBien, Check Point, GS1, TotalPlay, Womcy, among others, will be participating in CiberForum 2022.

Cyber attacks cause millionaire losses

A study carried out by RiskIQ highlights that computers with Internet connections “face 1.5 attacks“, which generate large losses of money for organizations. According to the publications made by PWC “information rescues have been around 70 million dollars” and the majority of companies (more than 50 %) estimate that by 2022 “cyber attacks will reach record numbers”.

For the editorial director of CiberForum, Uriel Naum Ávila, “companies seek to move quickly towards digital, but they are not taking into account the security risks that such a dizzying transformation implies. From his perspective, cybersecurity is essential for companies at the moment, therefore, it is no longer just a matter of specialized areas, but a matter of strategy in organizations.

Georgieva highlighted, during a conference organized by the Peterson Institute for International Economics that “in April we forecast economic growth of 6 %. In July it is also 6 %, but the composition of that 6 % has changed between April and July.”

According to the latest analyzes carried out, some nations will grow more rapidly, compared to the April diagnosis, while in others it will be slower, depending on the speed and effectiveness of the vaccination process. “The difference is mainly in the speed and effectiveness of the vaccines, and the ability to add fiscal space.”

For the representative of the IMF, it is essential to prioritize vaccination against the pandemic “as an economic policy” and with a “sense of urgency” to be able to fight Covid-19. E especially in the face of the new Delta variant, which has been spreading rapidly. “At the rate we are going today, we will be unable to cut the pandemic by the end of 2022.”

Georgieva urged nations that have surplus vaccines to coordinate, according to possibilities, donations to other countries. “If we speed things up, it will cost the same money, but it will have a greater impact.”

The official recalled that the IMF and other multilateral organizations have requested an investment from the international community by 50,000 million dollars, to facilitate access to vaccines and finance actions that boost the end of the pandemic.
