The Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI) has been recognized as an observer organization by the United Nations General Assembly, in a decision by consensus that had been promoted by the delegations of Spain and Argentina and subsequently supported by Colombia, El Salvador, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal and Uruguay.

The OEI, which had already been collaborating with several UN organizations, especially in the areas of its competence – the situation of education, science and culture in Latin America and the provision of support to vulnerable groups –, hopes to take advantage of this milestone to reinforce shared work.

The Secretary General of the OEI, Mariano Jabonero, has highlighted the organization’s motto, ‘We make cooperation happen’, and has pointed out that this work cannot be “a mere rhetorical exercise empty of commitments, content and scope. The recognition of the UN encourages us to follow that path,” he declared in a statement.

For her part, the Argentine ambassador to the UN, María del Carmen Squeff, has stressed that now the OEI will be able to “collaborate more efficiently with the international community” on issues such as the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and highlight 75 years of experience in Latin America, “to contribute to understanding its particularities, supporting processes of regional integration, south-south cooperation and promotion of development.”
