Although technical support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025, its functionality has not been disabled. Currently, Microsoft promises to “release a series of free security patches for another year to keep its users’ data protected.”

The company has stated that the effort is focused on improvements in stability and backups. However, it clarified that “these are solely security fixes to protect the system from potential cyberattacks by malware and other viruses that could seriously affect sensitive documents.”

The update released by Microsoft is version KB5078885 for builds 19045.7058 and 19044.7058. The update package addresses specific security vulnerabilities to mitigate risks, while also focusing on improving the quality of service.

It is accompanied by the Windows 11 update KB5079473 (released Tuesday, March 10), which resolves issues in File Explorer and more.

Other features of the update include: a warning dialog box in the Windows System Image Manager; improved file history during backups; a fix for a graphics stability issue; and expanded coverage for selected devices to automatically receive new Secure Boot certificates and replace older ones.

The company has emphasized the need for users to be enrolled in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program to continue receiving operating system updates. The subscription is free for the first year until October 14, 2026, after which a monthly fee will be required.
