The Dominican Republic and the United States signed an open skies agreement on Friday, August 2, to improve connectivity between both countries. The negotiations took 25 years.

The signing of the pact took place in the Dominican capital, Santo Domingo, with the goal of increasing the number of flights and being able to offer more competitive prices.

Present at the signing, held at the National Palace, were “the US Undersecretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and Environment, José Fernández, and the Dominican Minister of Tourism, David Collado,” accompanied by the president of the Caribbean country, Luis Abinader, “and part of his Government, as well as representatives of the US Administration.”

The participants indicated that the agreement defines a “historic” moment for both nations and stressed that it “will contribute to strengthening ties that are already very good.”

Abinader pointed out that the open skies agreement with the United States makes them “stronger,” and “constitutes a fundamental step toward strengthening our international connections and the economic development of our nation.”

In addition, the president of the Dominican Republic highlighted the fact as a pillar for the foundations of an international aviation system based on “equality of opportunities and respect for free enterprise and competition.”

US Undersecretary Fernández estimates that with this agreement the citizens of both countries will benefit and recalled that “more than 2.5 million people of Dominican descent live in the United States, the Dominican Republic’s first trading partner and first investor.”
