Venezuelan professional basketball experienced a historic day: Gaiteros del Zulia was crowned champion of the 2025 Superliga Profesional de Baloncesto (SPB) after defeating Trotamundos de Carabobo 80-67 in the fifth game of the final series, sealing a resounding 4-1 overall victory. With this achievement, the western team claimed its fifth championship and reaffirmed its place among the greats of national basketball.

Basketball fans in general, and those living or born in Zulia State in particular, wherever they are, began celebrating last Saturday at the end of the game. However, the celebrations have continued day after day. This sporting success for the Gaiteros team is also seen as a triumph for the people of Zulia. And the joy it brings has transcended Venezuela’s borders.

The Zulia team had gone 24 years without a title, thus ending a long drought and returning to the glory of our basketball.

Led by coach Julio Duquela, and with players like Michael Warren and Luis “Tapipa” Duarte — MVP of the final —, the Gaiteros displayed a consistent game, dominating on defense and capitalizing on every transition. Their run to the title was consistent from the regular round onwards, where they posted the best record of the tournament.

The Gaiteros del Zulia MVP declared that “this championship is a dream come true after a 24-year drought. The victory, especially against a strong team like Trotamundos, demonstrates the power of Gaiteros and the passion of the Zulia fans.” The player also highlighted the importance of this title for the history of Venezuelan basketball and for the city of Maracaibo.
