The presidential elections in Brazil will pit the current head of state, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, against Flávio Bolsonaro in the first round this Sunday, October 4, in a contest with 158 million voters.

According to a Quaest poll, Lula da Silva maintains a lead over Bolsonaro, “although it projects a tie between the two in a potential second round, in a race marked by a small percentage of undecided voters.”

The current president of the South American country is seeking his third term, with a lead of up to six points over his opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro.

According to the Quaest poll, Lula has 39 % of the vote intention, two points higher than last week, while Bolsonaro’s figure is 34 %, one point higher.

Once the results are known this Sunday, October 4, a second round is expected on October 25. This will occur if “no candidate surpasses 50 % of the votes.”

It is important to remember that, in addition to electing the new president of Brazil, on Sunday the Chamber of Deputies will also be renewed, two-thirds of the Senate will be elected, and the 27 regional governors will be chosen.

The Workers’ Party of Brazil, to which current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva belongs, proclaimed his candidacy this Sunday for the country’s general elections on October 4.

The elections will determine the new president of the South American nation, as well as the vice president, governors, and members of Congress.

The PT’s national convention, held in the city of São Paulo, in the state of the same name (southeast), “confirmed the president and his running mate, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, of the Brazilian Socialist Party, to repeat their successful 2022 ticket.”

Lula da Silva called on the population to defend sovereignty, stating that “a potential fourth administration would have five priorities: definitively resolving the education issue, creating a program for senior citizens, strengthening the defense industry, ensuring that rare earth elements remain under Brazilian control, and promoting the energy transition with social and technological development.”

According to the current Brazilian president, the country must strengthen its defense of industry to preserve sovereignty, in addition to safeguarding rare earth elements and critical minerals, among other strategic priorities for a potential new government.

Regarding the election campaign, it was reported that it will begin on August 16; the first round of the presidential elections will be on October 4, 2026.
