The Argentine government will tighten entry requirements through a decree of urgency and necessity that Javier Milei could announce shortly. The measure represents a modification to the requirements for obtaining citizenship and permanent residence in the country.

The measure was announced this Wednesday, May 14, although no further details of the government’s decision are known. It was preceded by the president’s speech in an ordinary session of Congress on March 1.

Argentine authorities have so far referred to stricter requirements for migrants wishing to obtain permanent residence in the country as well as citizenship.

With this decision, Milei has drawn comparisons to Donald Trump, President of the United States, who has caused unrest with deportations and legal measures against citizens who enter the country illegally or engage in illegal behavior once inside.
