“In no way is it in doubt that we cannot meet our obligations in pesos,” Batakis said at a press conference, where she clarified that these “rumors” are associated with “very strong malice against a government that was elected by popular vote.

In this sense, the minister recalled that it was the government of former President Mauricio Macri who entered into a situation of non-payment or ‘default’, but she has assured that the current Executive has “all the necessary mechanisms so that this does not happen”.

On the other hand, Batakis has indicated that the monthly budget quotas that the Ministry grants to the entire National Public Administration will be “only in accordance with the projection of real cash.” “We are not going to spend more than we have,” she pointed out in statements collected by the Télam agency.

Freezing of personnel in the public administration

Likewise, the new head of Economy has announced that it will be arranged that “the freezing of personnel be extended to all State agencies” and not only to the National Public Administration.

The measure would be implemented through a modification of the Financial Administration Law and was announced by the minister at a press conference that she offered this morning at the Palacio de Hacienda.

The Minister of Economy has stated that the context of the war in Ukraine “a lot affects Argentina”, but she has pointed out that despite this “unprecedented” situation, the “structural matrix of Argentina is intact”. Likewise, she maintains that the Government’s intention is to “maintain that productive structure, sustain it, make it more complex, make it more productive and create jobs.”

Last July 3, the Minister of Economy, Martín Guzmán, resigned after pressure due to the economic situation in the country. In her place, President Alberto Fernández appointed Silvina Batakis as the new head of the Administration’s Economic Department, who promised to comply with a path of continuity in the country’s economic policy and fiscal balance.

The purpose of the bill is to refine “the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to eliminate these requirements when the observed capital gain does not exceed $200.” In other words, it is aimed particularly at minor transactions as a way to stimulate the use of the main cryptocurrency as a form of payment in the country.

Current law establishes that using Bitcoin as a form of payment implies a sale to the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Therefore, any income obtained from the trading of cryptocurrencies must be declared “as taxable income, regardless of size,” or the purpose of the transaction.

Encouraging the use of Bitcoin

With the presentation of this new bill, it is intended to encourage the use of the main cryptocurrency as a means of exchange in the US economy. Suzan DelBene, co-author of the bill, considers that virtual currencies have undergone a great evolution in recent years and are increasingly used by people in their daily lives.

According to DelBene, “the antiquated regulations around virtual currencies do not take into account their potential use in our daily lives, (…).This bill with common sense reduces bureaucracy and opens the door to more innovations, growing ultimately our digital economy.”

David Schweikert, editor of the project, and representatives Darren Soto and Tom Emmer agree that the Virtual Currency Fiscal Equity Act is intended to “encourage the use of the main cryptocurrency as a means of exchange in the US economy.”
