The wait for Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ended this Monday with its official admission.

In a ceremony held this Monday, March 11 at NATO headquarters, the Swedish flag was raised as an indication of its integration into the organization. With this, Sweden becomes the 32nd member state.

The secretary general of the military alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, was present at the ceremony, who carried out the flag raising together with the Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson. Stoltenberg indicated that “Sweden’s accession to NATO makes the transatlantic military alliance bigger and stronger.”

He referred to Ukraine, a country that also requested membership in NATO, adding that it is closer to achieving this goal. Regarding Russia, he noted that Vladimir Putin failed in his attempts to weaken the organization.

Sweden, now an official member of NATO, has been a long-standing partner, “under the protective shield of Article 5” of the mutual defense treaty, Stoltenberg said, adding that this article is “the maximum guarantee of freedom and security. All for one and one for all.”

The Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, emphasized that NATO countries, now with Sweden, will share the “burdens, responsibilities and risks” in the face of war threats.
