The governments of Chile and Venezuela agreed on Thursday, July 30, to begin the process of normalizing diplomatic relations between the two countries, which have been suspended for two years.

Chilean President José Antonio Katz indicated that one of the first steps towards restarting relations between his country and Venezuela would be the reopening of consular services.

The president referred to the agreement as “a significant step forward,” adding that it “will allow us to address shared challenges in the areas of security, migration, and economic development.”

Katz indicated that both nations have taken the first step towards a new diplomatic era.
