China gave access to the digital yuan to tourists and other visitors to its territory by downloading the e-CNY application available in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

Foreigners do not need to have a passport or a bank account in the Asian country to use the Chinese digital currency in various transactions.

The announcement was made this Monday, when the Central Bank of China “published a user guide to the digital yuan, also known as e-CNY.”

The move seeks to expand the reach of the nation’s CBDC by inviting visitors to download the e-CNY app.

Once the download is complete, “people must register to create an account. According to the instructions, foreign visitors should select the authorized operator that supports international services with e-CNY.”

At the moment, they have four operators authorized by the Central Bank, which are the Bank of China, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the China Construction Bank and the Bank of Communications of China.

By registering in the app, foreigners have the opportunity to open an e-CNY wallet “using phone numbers from about 210 countries and regions. It also adds the possibility of opening a wallet without having to have an account with one of the authorized operators.”

As explained by the Central Bank, transactions for up to 2,000 yuan are authorized, and they have a daily limit of 5,000 yuan.
