Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was granted conditional release on Monday, November 10, by the Paris Court of Appeal after spending less than one month in prison.

On the same day, Sarkozy appeared via videoconference from the Parisian prison and “insisted that he had been the victim of manipulation in the case of Libyan financing of his 2007 presidential campaign.”

The measure was approved by the prosecutor, in favor of Sarkozy, “but under strict judicial supervision and with a ban on contact with other defendants and witnesses involved in the case.”

This is an early release that will entail strict judicial controls. “According to the Paris court, the former president will be prohibited from speaking with any official of the Ministry of Justice.”

During his 20 days in jail, the former president occupied a “single cell of about nine square meters, equipped with a small television, a bed and desk anchored to the floor, a plastic chair, shelves, a shower, a toilet without a lid, a hot plate, and a mini-fridge. He also has a wall-mounted telephone with which he can only receive calls, never make them.”
