WhatsApp has announced the reinforcement of the security of WhatsApp Web and desktop applications with an additional layer of protection through facial recognition or fingerprints to link the users account to their computer.

These versions for computers will include new functions, as announced by WhatsApp, as they want to ensure that they have a good level of protection, just like the one used on mobile devices.

Specifically, before the user scans the QR code from their phone to link the account to WhatsApp Web or WhatsApp desktop, they will be required to unlock the application through facial recognition or fingerprint, as available for the mobile operating system.

This new measure will limit the possibility that another person can link devices to the user’s WhatsApp account without permission, as explained by the company in a statement. It is also done “in a way that preserves privacy”. That is, “WhatsApp cannot access the biometric information stored by the device’s operating system,” they say.

The new security update will be available for users with compatible devices in the coming weeks, along with a visual redesign of the WhatsApp Web page for mobile phones.
