Netflix has set a long-term goal for the benefit of the environment dedicated to reducing the damage that the platform is causing to the planet. In this sense it has devised a plan called “Net zero gas emissions + Nature“.

Since the planet went into confinement, more and more users have joined Netflix, a tool that has been helpful for people distraction and entertainment. The question is: What damage does this service cause to the planet? The answer is that producing and transmitting content negatively affects the environment due to the greenhouse gases it generates on the planet.

According to an investigation carried out by experts from the University of Bristol, one-hour transmission on Netflix generates approximately 100 grams of CO2, equivalent to what a car would use to travel half a kilometer of distance.

Evaluating this scenario, the platform has devised a strategy to reduce its internal CO2 emissions in order to limit global warming to 1.5 ° C, and for this, “it plans to invest in programs dedicated to preserving and restoring ecosystems that naturally store carbon dioxide that warms the planet.”

The initiative was positively valued by Katharine Hayhoe, a climate scientist at Texas Technological University, who congratulates the company and assures that: “The film industry needs a leader when it comes to climate action. Changing the world starts with a company that steps up and inspires others to join it. I am delighted with how Netflix is ​​taking on this leadership role.”
