In a ceremony held this Monday, March 11 at NATO headquarters, the Swedish flag was raised as an indication of its integration into the organization. With this, Sweden becomes the 32nd member state.

The secretary general of the military alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, was present at the ceremony, who carried out the flag raising together with the Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson. Stoltenberg indicated that “Sweden’s accession to NATO makes the transatlantic military alliance bigger and stronger.”

He referred to Ukraine, a country that also requested membership in NATO, adding that it is closer to achieving this goal. Regarding Russia, he noted that Vladimir Putin failed in his attempts to weaken the organization.

Sweden, now an official member of NATO, has been a long-standing partner, “under the protective shield of Article 5” of the mutual defense treaty, Stoltenberg said, adding that this article is “the maximum guarantee of freedom and security. All for one and one for all.”

The Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, emphasized that NATO countries, now with Sweden, will share the “burdens, responsibilities and risks” in the face of war threats.

This is reflected in the declaration of the Vilnius summit, in Lithuania, in which the 31 NATO allies promise to invest “at least” 2 % and recognize the need to “urgently” reach this threshold to “comply sustainably with commitments as NATO allies”.

This commitment renews the one reached at the summit in Wales in 2014, when NATO set itself the goal of reaching 2 % within a decade. Almost over that term, only 11 of the 31 allies reach the scale, although in NATO they value that spending has grown uninterruptedly for a decade, when only three allies reached the goal.

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-96420 size-full" src="https://bitfinance.news/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/NATO_Summit_in_Lithu_78655506.jpg" alt="World leaders during the NATO summit in Vilnius. Lithuania (Reference image source: Paul Ellis/PA Wire/dpa)

Now the logic is that this figure is the minimum requirement and not a future perspective, but a pressing reality. So much so that the text agreed upon by the allied leaders recognizes that “in many cases” it will be necessary to spend more than this threshold, since the NATO countries have to “remedy the existing deficiencies and satisfy the needs in all areas derived from a more contested security order.”

Along with the commitment of 2 % in Defense, the leaders reiterate the objective of spending at least 20 % of the budget on equipment and military research. “We recognize that this should be met along with a minimum of 2 % of GDP in annual defense spending,” he stressed.

The NATO Heads of State and Government reiterate their commitment to provide the necessary forces, capabilities and resources for NATO operations, missions and activities. To do this, they will take into account the deterrence and defense requirements established by the NATO Defense Plans, which have received the approval of the leaders after months of being drawn up by the alliance’s military commanders. All this is accompanied by the objective of having a “strong and capable” industrial base that supplies NATO members with the necessary capabilities.

One of the challenges facing Ukraine in the war caused by the Russian invasion is that its government is under constant pressure from various types of cyber-attacks, to gain a “decisive advantage” in wartime in cyberspace.

In this sense, during the course of the war that began on February 24 of last year, Google provided assistance in the field of cybersecurity to Ukraine, which the company itself defines as one of its “most important contributions to date.” “to help this country.

Despite these efforts, however, the tech giant has identified Russian government-sponsored attacks against Ukraine, as well as disinformation operations and findings related to the cybercrime ecosystem.

This was presented by Google in its report entitled “The fog of war: the conflict in Ukraine and the transformation of the cyber threat environment“, where it highlights how Russia has launched “very aggressive” attacks and “in several directions” to obtain advantages in war through cyberspace.

These efforts include campaigns designed to improve intelligence gathering, deploy destructive attacks against victim networks, and take active steps to “shape the information environment” in Moscow’s favor.

The sources consulted highlight that the Spanish government values the inclusion of “threats from the south and the express mention of the Sahel, in which Spain had a particular interest” in the Strategic Concept, which is the action guide for the next 10 years.

Another objective highlighted by the Spanish government is the “inclusion of the use of immigration and energy supply as a tool to put pressure on the allies.”

The Secretary General of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, stated that “Sánchez praised the magnificent organization, which was recognized by the attending Heads of State and Government.”

Sánchez as a global actor

At the end of the summit, the organizers and participants feel great satisfaction and pleasure because the event took place without incident, which was described as “historic” by many international leaders who highlighted the organization, logistics and the role that Spain has played. as host country.

On the other hand, they highlight the role of Pedro Sánchez as a “global actor”, a facet that has been promoted after the meeting, highlighting that it is the result “of the president’s intense activity outside our borders, since he had previously visited the majority of leaders who participated in the Madrid Summit.

These requirements are based on the need not to repeat events of the past, respect the non-aggression pact, avoid the deployment of nuclear weapons as well as military activity in Ukraine.

Riabkov pointed out: “When our relations, because of Washington, approach a critical point, it is necessary in the most urgent way to take concrete steps to reduce the degree of confrontation.”

He highlighted in Moscow the conditions to put an end to the tensions generated by the possible inclusion of Ukraine in the Atlantic Alliance, with the corresponding mobilization of Russian troops to the border. According to the Kremlin, this claim constitutes “a non-negotiable red line.”

Russia sets conditions for the US and NATO

On the issue of nuclear weapons, which directly involves the US, the Russian government proposes a new treaty to prevent the deployment of such weapons outside the borders of the two countries. In addition, it proposes a commitment by both parties to destroy the existing infrastructures for nuclear weapons, as well as the suspension of tests.

Russia has also drafted an agreement with at least nine requests to NATO, particularly aimed at the bloc “desisting from all military activity on the territory of Ukraine and several countries in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia.”

Putin, for his part, remains firm in his anti-war position manifested on December 7 during the virtual summit with the president of the United States, Joe Biden. The Russian president insists on a kind of new “non-aggression pact” for peaceful coexistence, without armed conflicts, short and medium-range missiles, strategic bombers or military infrastructures that constitute a reason for confrontation between nations.

“We condemn malicious cyber activity that seeks to destabilize and damage Euro-Atlantic security and affect the daily lives of our citizens,” the Atlantic Council, NATO’s highest executive body, said in a statement.

The allies lament the attacks that affect Microsoft’s server, which have been denounced by both the European Union and the United States, undermine “security, trust and stability in cyberspace.”

Without wanting to point directly at Beijing, as if the US and Canadian authorities did, NATO asked China to fulfilling its international commitments and to act responsibly in the digital space.

“We reiterate our willingness to maintain a constructive dialogue with China based on interests and areas of relevance to the Alliance, including cyber threats,” said the Atlantic Alliance, after recalling that its defensive mandate includes deploying the means to defend against threats in the digital spectrum.
