Google Research’s artificial intelligence (AI) subsidiary, DeepMind, launched an interactive website called WeatherLab in partnership with the U.S. National Hurricane Center to help predict hurricane formation.

According to the technology company, it will be possible to share data to support predictions and alerts during the extreme weather season.

DeepMind was designed to “improve the reliability of these predictions” and thereby “protect communities and help them be better prepared to effectively deal with these natural disasters and proceed with early evacuations accordingly.”

Google emphasized that Weather Lab includes its “latest experimental AI hurricane model, based on stochastic neural networks,” capable of predicting data on cyclone formation, as well as their location and key characteristics such as intensity, size, and shape. With this data, it is possible to generate 50 possible scenarios up to 15 days before they occur.
