Regarding the National Consumer Price Index (INPC), the indicator reflected a moderation in inflationary pressures, triggering increases in the prices of “educational services, prepared foods, and housing, while agricultural and energy products showed declines.”

The core index, “which concentrates the goods and services whose prices respond most directly to market conditions, registered a monthly variation of 0.33 % and an annual increase of 4.28 %.”

In detail, merchandise prices increased 0.34 % and services prices, 0.32 %. The largest increases occurred in university tuition (1.82 %), primary education (5.98 %), and snack bars, restaurants, and taco stands (0.47 %). The non-core index, in contrast, decreased 0.10% monthly and showed an annual variation of 2.02 %.
In this context, the “National Consumer Price Index (INPC) decreased for the second consecutive fortnight and reached its lowest level since the first half of June, when it reached 4.78 %.”

The downward trend in the inflation rate continues despite adverse weather conditions. Ricardo Aguilar, chief economist at Invex, indicated that it will be necessary to analyze more inflation data to confirm that core inflation will remain downward.

Among the products that registered the greatest price increase are beef, pork and chicken, in addition to eggs, with an annual increase of 14.69 %. Followed by fruits and vegetables, with an increase in prices of 14.27 %.

Mexicans also faced higher prices for food prepared in “loncherías, taquerías, torterías, inns and restaurants, as well as detergent and payments in universities, high schools and their own homes.”

The prices of cleaning products, domestic gas and plane tickets registered a slight decrease for the first half of August.

Inflation in the first half of August was below the estimate of analysts consulted by Citibanamex, who expected inflation of 5.33 % annually.

Analysts predict that year-on-year inflation will show some slowdown in the remainder of 2024 despite the uncertain economic outlook, increased volatility in the exchange rate and climatic characteristics that affect food production in the country.

For its part, the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) indicates in its forecasts that “it will not be until the last quarter of 2025 when inflation reaches its goal of three percent. At the beginning of August, the institution cut the reference rate by 25 basis points, to leave it at a level of 10.75 %, as a measure to control long-term inflation.”

The organization’s report indicates that the increase in the inflation rate has been maintained for three fortnights, with an estimate “well above the average expected by Banco de México (Banxico) for the first quarter of the year, which is 4.3 %”.

According to Bloomberg Línea, various daily consumption items such as tobacco, packaged soft drinks and cigarettes have suffered a price increase due to the annual increase in the Special Tax on Production and Services.

“On the other hand, core inflation, an indicator that does not measure the price movement of energy products or unprocessed foods, increased 0.25 % at a biweekly rate, to stand at 4.78 % at an annual rate,” according to the digital medium.

In contrast to general inflation, the underlying component has maintained its downward trend, reaching the lowest level in 23 fortnights in January.

After accumulating four months of decline between February and June, inflation in Venezuela increased again in July, now falling to levels not seen in the first eight months of 2023, according to data managed by the Venezuelan Finance Observatory (OVF), an independent economic information agency.

All in all, it continues to be a figure that reflects a hyperinflation scenario and that contrasts enormously with the rest of the countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region (except Argentina, where inflation is also above three digits).

Among the items that registered the greatest increases, communication services stand out with a monthly increase of 26.7 %, particularly Internet service and mobile telephony. Other groups that reflected price increases were food, standing at 8 % per month, double that registered in July, transportation (9.9 %), education (9.4 %) and housing rental (10 %).

This behavior of inflation in August occurred in a context in which the exchange rate of the bolivar against the dollar increased 8.3 % in the parallel market, while the official dollar exchange rate rose 10.5%.

This It means that prices overreacted to the depreciation of the bolivar, which could be observing an inflationary trajectory that is difficult to stop as the economy is without an anchor or benchmark for price formation.
