According to Ítalo Atencio, president of the association, between 60 % and 70 % of transactions in retail chains are already carried out through these terminals, which has increased consumer satisfaction by 5 %.

Self-checkout technology is used in several Latin American countries. According to Atencio, in Venezuela, this system provides satisfaction to consumers, who spend an average of 55 minutes per supermarket visit.

“Among the benefits most valued by users are the ability to bag products according to their own preferences, greater privacy when purchasing sensitive items, such as medications or feminine hygiene products, and a noticeable ease of use for small purchases.”

The conveniences include the use of contactless cards and mobile devices. In Atencio’s opinion, this is a tool that’s here to stay. The trade association representative predicts that its use will continue to grow in both supermarkets and pharmacies.

Atencio highlighted an increase in mass consumption in the country, with sales concentrated in “essential items such as basic foods, hygiene and cleaning products.”

According to the executive, “over the past 12 months, there has been a progressive migration of consumers from small grocery stores and bodegas to large supermarket chains,” citing as the main reasons for this shift “the stability of supply — with a 97 % supply index — and strict adherence to the official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV).”

On the other hand, Atencio clarified that despite this growth in volume, household spending in Venezuela remains geared towards a subsistence economy. The industry association pointed out that “between 60 % and 65 % of Venezuelans’ income is allocated exclusively to food and personal hygiene.”

Atencio said, “Prices are going to go down, that’s for sure,” adding that “the cost structure naturally adjusts to the exchange rate,” although he clarified that it’s not an instantaneous process, as it depends on inventory replenishment and agreements with suppliers.

According to ANSA, “domestic competition and a commitment to the end consumer are forcing businesses to reflect the drop in the foreign currency on product labels to maintain sales volume.”

Atencio referred to transparency in price marking as a fundamental aspect in this stage of economic transition. He emphasized the commitment of supermarkets affiliated with the association to ensure that the benefits of the inflow of foreign currency and the revaluation of the bolivar “reach the pockets of citizens directly.”

He emphasized that product prices were reviewed, “and each sector communicated each of its nodes that were affecting those prices.” He also acknowledged an increase in domestic production of various items and highlighted the presence of “brands for goods such as rice, tomato sauce, corn flour, pasta, coffee, margarine, mayonnaise, cleaning products, and grains; which he believes was achieved through the increase in the number of stores throughout Venezuela.”

At the end of the interview, Atencio mentioned the presence of 154 supermarkets with bakeries and 130 chains with coffee shops throughout Venezuela.

Atencio explained that “currently, 96 % of transactions are made in bolivars, while the remaining 4 % are made in foreign currency.” He also highlighted the use of payment platforms operating in the country that allow “installment purchases as an alternative to increase average spending.”

The association president referred to the frequency of shopping, which is determined by income, indicating that previously people would shop once a week for essential items, primarily protein products. This pattern has changed to shopping two or three times a week.

Atencio mentioned that “90 % of the products on the shelves are made in Venezuela or assembled there, while the other 10 % are imported.” The preference for locally produced products is positive for competition.
