The controversial owner of the social network Twitter, Elon Musk, declared in an interview that the platform “will comply with European legislation” aimed at combating disinformation and cyber-hate.

“Twitter will respect the law. If a law is enacted, I reiterate, Twitter is committed to respecting it,” said the billionaire when asked about the new regulations of the European Union (EU) in relation to digital services.

The interview with Musk, who also owns Tesla and SpaceX, was recorded on Friday during the VivaTech event in Paris.

The Digital Services Act (DSA) will come into force on August 25 and will force platforms to take “swift” action to remove any illegal content, on pain of facing fines of up to 6% of their revenue globally.

Twitter withdrew from the EU code of conduct against disinformation on the internet, established in 2018, at the end of May.

In the interview, Musk clarified that Twitter will not exceed “legal provisions” when it comes to censorship and free speech, citing the difficulty of defining what is considered “good or bad, acceptable” or not.

“However, if a law is enacted, as the law in a democracy represents the will of the people (…) it must be respected,” he emphasized.

The superimposition of faces and voices make it look like real information or a situation, when in reality it is an AI manipulation.

Some of the advice from specialists on the subject aims to focus on key aspects, such as the blinking of the person in the video. In a deepfake, the person blinks fewer times and less quickly or naturally than in real life.

On the other hand, they indicate to be attentive to areas of the body beyond the face and neck, since in fake videos it is more difficult to modify the entire body. At the slightest detail that does not fit, it is proper to doubt.

Another aspect that could make it possible to identify a video created by AI is the movement of the mouth. It has been established that artificial intelligence algorithms still fail to clearly copy the inside of the mouth, teeth and tongue. Added to this are failures in the synchronization of the voice with the movement of the mouth.

Regarding the overall quality of the possible deepfake, it is important to pay attention to details such as jumps in playback, blurred edges, poor lighting, skin that is too smooth, changes in the background of the video.

About 40 % of teenage users prefer platforms like TikTok or Instagram to search, instead of doing them through Google Maps or the Google search engine, according to a study carried out by the technological giant.

However, “these constantly receive false and misleading claims when they search TikTok for information on prominent news topics”, whether it be the Russian invasion of Ukraine, school shootings or Covid vaccines, as is clear from an investigation. made by NewsGuard.

This organization, specialized in combating false information, has identified in the analyzed sample that almost 20 % of the videos that appeared in the search results contained erroneous information.

NewsGuard analyzed 540 TikTok search results, ranging from more neutral terms like ‘2022 election’, ‘climate change’ and ‘mRNA vaccine’ to more controversial ones like ‘Jan 6 FBI’ and ‘Uvalde conspiracy’.tx’. Of the total videos results analyzed on TikTok, the analysis revealed that 105 videos (19.4 %) contained false or misleading claims.

The researchers note that TikTok’s own search engine suggested more controversial search terms when more neutral ones were entered. As an example, they explain that when typing ‘climate change’, TikTok suggested searching for others such as ‘climate change discredited’ and ‘climate change does not exist’. In the case of ‘Covid vaccine’, the suggestions included ‘covid vaccine truths’, ‘covid vaccine exposed’, ‘Covid hiv vaccine’ and ‘Covid vaccine warning’.

In the results of Google’s analysis, NewsGuard states that this engine offered “easier” suggestions, such as ‘Covid vaccine walk-in’, ‘which Covid vaccine is the best’ and ‘types of Covid vaccines’ in the case of searching ‘Covid vaccine. “None of these terms were suggested by TikTok,” they point out from NewsGuard, who indicate that “by comparison, it provided higher quality and less polarizing results, with much less misinformation.”

TikTok contents removed for misleading

TikTok, for its part, ensures that it will remove any content, regardless of format, that violates the community standards, which includes “spam or false participation, identity theft or misleading information that causes significant damage”, as stated in the Integrity and Authenticity section.

According to the latest ‘Community Standards Compliance Report’ available (January-March 2022), the company removed 102,305,516 videos from the platform for non-compliance with policies, only 0.6 % for the issues listed in the section ‘Integrity and Authenticity’.

According to several media outlets, the US social network paid Republican consultancy firm Targeted Victory to publish op-eds and letters to the editor in major regional media outlets to undermine its main Chinese-owned competitor, owned by ByteDance.

This was confirmed by several employees of Targeted Victory, who have leaked a series of emails to this medium to show that they developed a media campaign to alert younger American users of the dangers of using the application.

One of those emails includes a statement of intent from one of the directors of this Republican lobby group, who noted that TikTok is the “number one app for sharing data from the youth and teens who use it.”
