A delegation from the Canadian government recently visited Venezuela to assess the reopening of its embassy in the South American nation and the potential return of diplomats.

“The possibility of re-establishing a permanent diplomatic presence in Caracas comes after the profound political changes in Venezuela this year and after two Canadian officials recently traveled to the Venezuelan capital to evaluate, among other things, the conditions of the Canadian diplomatic mission,” Bloomberg reported.

The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement clarifying that the country continues to monitor the evolving situation in Venezuela, “including the possibility of conditions allowing for the re-establishment of a physical diplomatic presence in the country.”

Canada has not had accredited diplomats in Venezuela since 2019. However, Wendy Drukier, Director General for South America and Western Hemisphere Affairs at the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, explained last March that the embassy was never formally closed and remains operational with a reduced number of local staff.

In any case, any reopening will depend on “diplomats receiving the necessary accreditation and legal guarantees to perform their duties safely.”

The BRICS group, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, announced its new members, which are: Cuba, Bolivia, Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan.

With the announcement made this Saturday, January 18, new alliances are established that fulfill the category of partner country, created at the XVI BRICS Summit, in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024.

“The new members have a lower position than the permanent members, but they have the possibility of participating in summits and thematic meetings.”

It is important to note that negotiations to accept new members began in 2023 by the group originally made up of Brazil, Russia, India, South Africa and China.
