The increase in the prices of items such as cocoa and coffee, together with the hydrocarbon sector, has maintained a good rhythm of the markets in Latin America, despite declines in the value of wheat and corn.

According to the Bloomberg Commodities Spot Index, which analyzes future contracts for 24 items, including food and raw materials, as well as minerals and hydrocarbons, an increase of 5 % was experienced in the first half. The products that gave the greatest impetus to commodity trading and generated profits for investors were coffee, cocoa and oil.

Cocoa, although down from its peak in April, overall rose in value 84% from January to June. For its part, coffee, a key product in the region’s markets, reached a price increase of 22.3 %, leading Bloomberg’s list of the 24 products in the basket analyzed.

In contrast, wheat and corn futures contracts suffered losses in the first half (8.88% and 12.73 %, respectively). One of the main reasons for this decline in the price of corn is the effect of climate change in the United States; and in the case of wheat, as a consequence of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Oil and copper price increased from January to June

With respect to oil, this main source of energy and key in the economies of Latin America, the benchmark WTI crude oil experienced an increase between January and June of 16 %, and it is expected that together with Brent crude oil, prices will average in the second half barrel of $80 and $84, respectively.

The last step in the commodities section is occupied by copper, with gains that represent an increase of 15.4 %. Credicorp Capital’s projections suggest that demand for this mineral, with China as the main market (50 % of world production), will double by 2035.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) reported that world exports of intermediate goods (IG) continued to grow in the last quarter of 2021, registering a figure of around 21 %. However, its increase was lower than those registered in previous quarters of the same year, where 27 % and 47 % were registered for the third and second quarters, respectively.

Intermediate goods or IG is an indicator of the level of quality in supply chains and ranges from inputs used in food production to textiles and metals needed to produce goods.

On the other hand, manufacturing inputs called “Other industrial supplies” registered a year-on-year growth of around 31 % in the last quarter of 2021. These inputs include “metal structures, electrical conductors, medical and pharmaceutical products”.

While global exports of food and beverages reported a drop in the quarter, reporting a figure in the order of 23 % compared to the 28 % registered during the third quarter. The same behavior was shown by minerals and precious stones, which registered barely a 10 % growth compared to the 13 % and 40 % registered in the previous quarters.

China maintains IG export leadership

During the fourth quarter of last year, China ranked first among the countries with the largest IG exports in terms of value in the global market, registering some 418 billion dollars in the quarter, which maintains it as the leader of that global market.

Other countries with year-on-year growth were Belgium and the United Kingdom, which registered 39 % and 34 % respectively. Then Malaysia stands out with 28 %, “with three quarters of its national production inputs sent to Asian partners.”

The largest importing country of IGs was India with 42 % growth in the fourth quarter, while in value terms China and the United States obtained 439 billion dollars and 268 billion dollars respectively.

The Apple company recently exhibited its “Environmental Progress Report 2022“, where it emphasized the operation of the Daisy robot in the recycling of 14 different minerals, including lithium, which has allowed it to expand the essential use in the creation of its products.

Daisy began its operations in the company in 2018. This robot is a set of machinery responsible for “automatically separating the parts of the iPhone to recycle them more easily.”

The robot measures approximately 20 meters where old iPhones pass, even unarmed. Apple’s specialized publication, Applesfera, explained that during this process the “batteries, screws and haptic motor among other objects” are disassembled.

After separating the pieces, those components that are recyclable are moved to another place where “minerals are extracted, refined and reused.”

According to the information provided, Daisy can break 200 iPhones in an hour, that is, 20 seconds per device. It currently has the ability to isolate 23 smartphone models of the brand.

The report presented by the company indicates that 59 % of the aluminum used by Apple in 2021 in its products came from recycled sources, and 100 % of the aluminum contained in the casing of most phones was recycled.

Apple drives clean energy

Apple has been using recycled lithium, tin, cobalt and rare earths in its devices for years with the aim of “saving costs and preventing further damage to the environment.”

Apple’s vice president of the environment, Lisa Jackson, indicated that for the company the most important thing is to comply with the environment. “We are making real progress in our work to address the climate crisis and one day make our products without taking anything from the land.”

According to Jackson, the company’s advanced pace of work and innovation helps work teams “use today’s products to build tomorrow’s, and as our global supply chain transitions to clean energy, we are charting a path for other companies to follow.”

The company also pointed out in its report that it made significant progress towards its goal of eliminating plastic in its packaging by 2025.

Since 2015, the company has reduced the use of plastic in its packaging by 75 %. In 2021, plastic only represented 4 % in packaging.
