Around six in the morning, Moscow time, this Thursday, February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in a television message the start of a special “military operation” in eastern Ukraine.

“I have made the decision of a military operation”, declared the Russian president and urged the Ukrainian military to “lay down their arms”, and clarified that there will be retaliation for those who stand in the way of the procedure.

According to Putin’s statements, the decision was made hours after the Kremlin “claimed to have received a request for help from pro-Russian separatists to counter the Ukrainian army.”

The Russian president has pointed out that the military operation is not aimed at an occupation of Ukraine but its “demilitarization”. However, he made it very clear that in the face of any interference, “Russia’s response will be immediate and will lead to consequences that they have never known.”

The response from the president of the United States, Joe Biden, was immediate. The president described the attack as “unjustified” and warned that Russia will be responsible to the world for this decision.

On the other hand, the Secretary General of the United Nations Organization, Antonio Guterres, spoke from the Security Council directly to the President of Russia, urging him not to carry out an armed attack on Ukraine.
