In a tight vote of 221-212, the U.S. House of Representatives has backed the formalization of the conservative-led impeachment investigation against President Joe Biden. All Republicans rallied in support, despite domestic concerns about the lack of conclusive evidence of misconduct on the part of the president.

House Republicans expressed support for a process that could lead to Biden’s impeachment, thus facing the maximum penalty for “high crimes and misdemeanors,” as the Constitution describes it.

This authorization guarantees the extension of the investigation until 2024, coinciding with the possible re-election of Biden and the probable confrontation with former President Donald Trump, who faced two political trials during his term.

In a joint statement after the vote, President Mike Johnson and his team emphasized that they will not prejudge the outcome of the investigation, but underscored the importance of the evidentiary record. The decision to hold the vote was made amid growing pressure to move forward on the nearly year-old investigation focused on the Biden family’s businesses.

Although the investigation has raised ethical questions, so far no conclusive evidence of bribery or corruption on the part of Biden, either in his current position or in his previous role as vice president, has been found.

The conservative Mike Johnson was elected this Wednesday as the new President of the House of Representatives in the United States, after obtaining the full support of the Republicans.

The congressman represents the state of Louisiana and is a recognized ally of Donald Trump. He arrives at the political scene after the departure of the previous president of the Lower House, Kevin McCarthy.

Despite the setbacks he had along the way, the new speaker of the House of Representatives achieved 220 votes compared to 209 for Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic candidate.

The House remained without direction for three weeks. After the vote on Tuesday night, Johnson’s election was announced on Wednesday, with a call on the new president’s social networks for Republicans to join the inauguration.

Among the immediate challenges that await Johnson is the dilemma over continuing financing to Ukraine, in addition to the expiration of financing to the Government on November 17; if they maintain aid to Israel in the conflict against Hamas, among others.
