Macron and Meloni held a closed-door meeting to discuss a variety of issues, mainly the migration crisis, the Euro-Mediterranean Med9 summit to be held on Friday in Malta and the upcoming informal European Council to be held in the Spanish city of Granada.

The meeting, which lasted around one hour and twenty minutes, was “cordial”, according to sources at the Chigi Palace. The Franco-Italian ‘roadmap’ is expected to be unveiled in phases at the various regional and international summits scheduled for the coming days.

While Italy and France are bringing closer positions on migration, the League, led by Matteo Salvini and which is part of the Italian government coalition, has criticized Germany for its position regarding aid for humanitarian NGOs working in the Mediterranean approved by the Bundestag.

The deputy secretary of the League, Andrea Crippa, stated this Tuesday that the German side seeks to “destabilize” the Italian Government by using migration to “reduce the consensus” existing in the center-right bloc.

“80 years ago, the German Government decided to invade States with its Army, but it went badly. Now they finance the invasion of illegal immigrants to destabilize governments that the social democrats do not like,” he said, reported in the newspaper La Repubblica.

The German Foreign Ministry reported on Friday that it would accept the funds approved by the Bundestag for a maritime rescue project and another for land assistance, each for an amount between 400,000 and 800,000 euros.
