Through a statement, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the decision of the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, to end the data verification program or fact-checking.

The news about the change in content moderation policies was published this Tuesday, January 7. Zuckerberg argued: “We are going to eliminate fact-checkers (content verifiers) to replace them with community notes similar to those of X, starting in the United States.”

Users will take on the role of this program, according to the executive, identifying potentially misleading posts that require more context, “a task that until now was done by experts and independent fact-checking organizations.”

Among the reasons Zuckerberg gives for this decision are “the changes in the political and social landscape and a desire to embrace freedom of expression.” He has also admitted flaws in Meta’s systems for moderating its platforms.
