According to the parent company of the social network, the objective is to attract young users, who search Facebook for interesting content, share audiovisual material, as well as stay up to date on cultural events.

In this sense, Meta’s announcement revolved around the new features that products such as Facebook Dating or Messenger will offer, in addition to new tabs such as Groups or Explore.

The tests being carried out in Austin, New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco and Phoenix allow users to discover local content of interest in a single tab. Thus, “the platform has begun to integrate a new tab called Local” where users can find local information from the Marketplace, Groups and Events sections.

Facebook is also testing a “Weekly and Weekend Summary for Events”, specifically with an agenda of upcoming events that notifies users through notifications with data based on their particular interests.

Another new feature is the Feed, “a new sliding section that highlights the best content on the social network related to your area”. In the “Explore” tab there will be personalized content to explore in depth thanks to the social network’s algorithm, which includes areas such as personal growth, arts, travel, sports, decoration and much more.

Videos, full-screen player and new AI assistant in Groups

Facebook is making progress in conquering the youngest with new features in the audiovisual field. “A new updated Video tab will be introduced soon that will make it easier for people to discover Reels, videos and live streams that interest them.” Also, “full-screen playback of this content will be included.”

In the Groups tab, Facebook will make it easier to answer questions with an AI-based assistant. “If the Group administrator decides to activate this feature, every time a new member enters it, they will be able to open a chat with the Group’s AI and ask the Group questions they have about it and access relevant posts within it.” The tests include selected Groups in the US and Canada.

Facebook Dating and Messenger are also updated

To strengthen Facebook Dating, the network launched Matchmaker, “a tool that allows you to invite up to five friends to choose potential matches for you.”

Regarding Messenger, earlier this year, the Notes feature was introduced in the section to “share how you feel.” With the redesign, you can include music or mentions. On the other hand, the Memories feature is now available to relive and re-share moments posted in the past.

Communities arrive in Messenger

It is a function that allows small and medium-sized communities to be connected through shared interests. Users have the option to create multiple chats according to the topics that the group handles, in order to organize and facilitate conversations within a larger Community. The management and moderation of your community is possible without the need to create a Group on Facebook and grow a community by invitation through the QR code.

Content monetization

A few weeks ago, Facebook introduced its “Imagine” tool that allows users access through the Feed, the Stories composer and the profile page. Earlier, in early 2024, they launched AI-powered Comment Summaries in Public Groups, Pages, and Creators. Precisely to support those who produce content, Facebook is launching a new monetization program that will allow them to expand “the opportunities for them to earn with more content formats. Meta is also planning to test monetization options in Stories in the coming months.”

The company already uses end-to-end encryption on its platforms, such as WhatsApp, which keeps personal conversations safe from threat actors. In this way, only the users themselves can access them and not even Meta can view their content.

From now on, users will be able to configure their interface with static colors and gradient themes, as well as group profile photos for different chats with friends or coworkers.

Meta has also noted that it has rebuilt link previews for end-to-end encrypted chats, so users can know what content it directs them to before clicking on it.

This package of news also includes the display of the status as active, to indicate to your contacts that you are available to receive calls. However, the company has indicated that it is an indicative, so it can be deactivated to maintain privacy.

Bubbles has also been introduced in its version for Android. Bubbles are circles with the image of contacts that allow you to read and reply to messages while using other applications. Once this option is enabled and a message is received, this notification format will appear.

On the other hand, the company owned by Mark Zuckerberg has indicated that it has also begun to expand global tests of end-to-end encrypted chats by default in Messenger and that in the coming months, “millions of people around the world will see that some of its individual threads are end-to-end encrypted.”

Meta has said that it is aware that “people want a space to connect, and they want to know that those conversations are private, safe and secure.” Based on this need, he has created a team of engineers and experts in this field to implement the default end-to-end encryption on the platform.

In doing so, it has stated that this is a random testing process and that it will provide status updates as it progresses with this rollout over the course of 2023.

The company that owns the social network will begin testing this functionality in Messenger in the coming weeks, with the intention of extending it to Facebook groups as well, giving users a space to contact other people who share their interests.

These chats are reminiscent of WhatsApp Communities, which the company announced in April and has already begun to deploy within the beta of its mobile applications, still under development and testing.

This is a new section in the messaging platform that brings together in one place the conversation groups that revolve around a theme or a common social space, such as the children’s school or the activities of neighborhood associations.

Meta began testing new Messenger features, such as end-to-end encryption by default and the ability to create and store backups of these encrypted conversations.

The end-to-end encryption is a security measure that protects the messages exchanged during a conversation so that they cannot be intercepted by third parties, not even by the messaging platform itself. However, users can give their consent so that it can access said information.

This method is already present in another Meta product, WhatsApp. In Facebook’s messaging app, Messenger, activation of this encryption by the user has been optional since 2017, when it introduced Secret Conversations.

Now, the company has started testing so that point-to-point encryption is activated by default in any conversation on this messaging platform. The first tests have begun this week, according to what the technology company pointed out in a statement on its website.

Secure Storage will be the default way to protect end-to-end encrypted conversation history in Meta, and will be automatically turned on for accounts you are running these tests on.

These, in turn, will be able to continue accessing their message history and will continue to have the option of reporting to the company any of these messages that they consider inappropriate or violate their use policies.

The announcement was made within the framework of the Facebook Connect event. In the event he also explained that the purpose is “to expand the emporium and set our sights on the metaverse” but social networks that comprise it, such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, will keep their names.

According to Zuckerberg, Meta is “a company that creates technology to connect and together we can finally put people at the center of our technology and unlock a vastly larger creator economy.”

Zuckerberg stressed that the Facebook company has evolved a lot and at present the name does not represent everything that the corporation is doing. He expressed that the corporation will continue to be closely linked to the product. However, it aspires to take over as a “metaverse company.”

The formal presentation of the new name was made through a video where they confirmed that they will continue to be a company “that designs technology focused on people.” The CEO clarified that once the Meta name comes into effect, people will not have to use the Facebook social network to be able to join and enjoy the services offered by the corporation.

Change of name but not of mission

The corporation, with its new name, is executing a “fundamental” change but will continue with its mission, focused on “bringing people together with our applications”, which will not change.

The new corporation will be focused in two large sectors: one dedicated to current social networks and the other for future platforms. Hence the need to host a new brand that allows to reflect everything that the company is doing and the future plans to execute, that can identify “who we are.”

During the event, the CEO of the corporation, now called Meta, criticized how technology is being used today, focused primarily on “applications and not on people”, which is significantly impacting the metaverse. “This is not the way we should use technology. The metaverse gives us the opportunity to change that if we do it right,” he pointed out.

For Zuckerberg, there is the possibility of designing more open platforms that allow people to discover and live experiences together, with greater interoperability.

The messaging app has given more privacy controls to users, who already had end-to-end encryption in chat messages since 2016 and are now able to activate the function also in video calls, as announced in a statement by Facebook.

Call encryption is an optional feature that users can enable if they wish. It offers protection to users against hackers, so that calls are encrypted, except for the participants, nobody can know the keys in the process.

Likewise, Facebook Messenger has introduced updated controls for messages that disappear automatically, in which users can now choose more options, so that the content expires between five seconds and 24 hours.

Facebook has also announced other news that will come soon to Messenger. The app will begin testing end-to-end encryption in group chats, including voice and video calls. The new feature will be piloted in the coming weeks. It will be accompanied by controls to avoid unwanted interactions, such as selecting that only friends can send chat requests.

A new feature is the option to protect Instagram direct messages with end-to-end encryption, which works in a similar way to Messenger chats. This novelty will be tested among a limited group of adult users of the social network in some countries.
