Meta has decided to remove the Messenger Lite application from Android, a closure that will take effect on September 18, although it has already begun to redirect users of this service to Messenger and Facebook Lite.

Messenger Lite is a version of its Messenger messaging application optimized for older Android devices or exposed to slow Internet connections, which takes up little space on the device’s storage and maintains the basic services of the standard ‘app’.

The technology company launched this light application in 2016, and it was now, seven years later, that it was no longer available for download in the Google Play Store for new users. Those who already had it installed on their device have begun to see a notification that warns of the end of its operation.

This message indicates that the app will disappear on September 18 and to avoid additional concerns, confirm that the information will be available in the main Messenger app.

In fact, since the beginning of the week, users of Messenger Lite for Android have begun to be redirected to Messenger or Facebook Lite “to send or receive messages on Messenger,” as a company spokeswoman confirmed to TechCrunch. There was also a light version of Messenger for iOS back in the day, but Meta withdrew it in 2020.
