This Friday, May 1st, bank branches throughout Venezuela will be closed due to the International Workers’ Day holiday, according to the calendar of the National Superintendency of Banking Sector Institutions (Sudeban).

The agency encourages users of national banks to use digital channels and ATMs to carry out their transactions safely and conveniently.

Citizens can make payments, transfers, deposits, and balance inquiries online from their homes, through personal computers and mobile applications on their cell phones.

The institution recommends making necessary cash withdrawals or upcoming payments in advance to avoid any issues due to this Friday’s holiday.

Rodríguez did not provide details about the salary increase, so it is unclear whether it refers to the minimum monthly wage or the bonuses currently paid to workers.

The interim president indicated that the salary increase effective May 1st will be “responsible.”

The Venezuelan Banking Association (AVB) issued Circular No. 188, informing that, starting May 1st, the Central Bank will cease processing checks through the electronic clearinghouse (CEE).

According to the AVB, a new system will be established: validation and collection will be done directly at the teller window of the issuing bank. If the person has an account at the same institution, “the payment can be made via direct deposit at the teller window. If they are not a client of the issuing bank, the institution may choose to pay in cash –depending on the amount–, facilitate the opening of an account, or apply other mechanisms.”

Regarding the availability of funds, it will be immediate if the check is deposited into an account at the same bank. “However, if the transaction involves different institutions, the money will be available the next business day.”

The AVB (Venezuelan Banking Association) reported that this new system may involve the collection of fees, depending on the method used.

The change in check cashing is part of the transition to the era of digital payments. This method has been steadily gaining ground. “According to the Banking Association, 99.9 % of transactions in the country are already carried out through digital channels.” Furthermore, “the removal of checks from the clearinghouse reflects their declining relevance in an environment dominated by electronic transfers and digital payments.”

The government of Chilean President Gabriel Boric is working to present on May 1st the law that limits the working week to 40 hours – now it is at 45 – in a new setback for the ultra-liberal economic system inherited from the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.

The Minister of Labor, Jeannette Jara, has explained that they trust that the 40-hour working day will be “very good news for workers” next International Workers’ Day.

“We have very few procedures left in the National Congress,” he pointed out. “We hope that with the agreement that we have reached, given that the project has progressed with a unanimous vote, we can, in short, have it ready and give very good news to the workers of the country this May 1st”, Jara declared. , according to Radio Biobío.

The Senate Finance Commission will resume discussion of the project this week and the initiative would be voted on in full in the second half of March. The standard provides for a gradual implementation, with a reduction to 44 hours in the first year of validity, to 42 in the third and 40 in the fifth year.

“It is essential for people’s lives. It has an impact on the possibility, for example, of having more time to share with the family, with our daughters and sons,” Jara pointed out.
