France long stated its position in favor of banning children under 15 from using social media, in addition to requiring platforms like X, Reddit, and Mastodon to provide age verification.

This week, the president of the European nation, Emmanuel Macron, insisted that the European Union move quickly on a decision on the issue to protect children from sensitive content.

Greece appears to have initiated the proposal, now followed by Spain and France. In the latter, the government already requires certain controls regarding social media use by children under 15.

Macron has called for a swift decision in the region regarding measures such as limiting the time young people spend online and the content they can access, as well as the actions they could take online, such as online purchases, which could even pose a danger to users and third parties.

Mozilla has joined social networks with an instance in the Mastodon fediverse, which it launched this Thursday as a private beta, with which they do not intend to be neutral but to create a space for dialogue in which everyone can participate.

Mozilla.social is the social network that the browser debuted at Mastodon, as part of the fediverso that it promotes, which “moves the power away from big technology companies and puts it in the hands of diverse voices to build a social platform that meets the needs of people, not the needs of shareholders.

As of this week, it is available as a private beta with a waiting list, because Mozilla has proposed this project as “a long-term investment” with which they believe they can “contribute to improving Mastodon and social networks in general” as they explain in the official blog.

The social network will have moderation. It will not be a neutral platform, as Mozilla warns, since they consider that the expression neutrality is frequently used “as an excuse to allow behavior and content designed to harass and harm people from communities that have always faced harassment and violence.”

Instead, moderation will be based on the values embodied in the Mozilla Manifesto, which include human dignity, inclusion, safety, individual expression, and collaboration. There will be rules that will govern the way in which all users will interact on the social network, and for this reason they already anticipate that whoever does not agree is “completely free to go elsewhere.”

They also warn that they don’t think the moderation rules are “perfect on day one,” and even admit that they may never be. But they assure that they are working to “create a way to have a dialogue with the community.“

The social network Twitter announced this weekend that it will ban accounts that promote certain rival digital platforms for free on it, as reported by the Twitter Support account this Sunday.

In a thread of tweets, Twitter said it will remove “accounts created solely for the purpose of promoting other social platforms and content containing links or usernames,” citing the following: Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Nostr and Post.

Posts from the Twitter Support account are no longer available, though you can still see the notifications that were implemented in place of the removed tweets from some affected users, leading to the ‘Notices on Twitter’ page and its meaning’ of the Help Center of the social network.

Basically, this new rule would result in the deletion of an account or a publication that was linked to the user’s on one of the prohibited platforms, which they usually use to spread their work on different social networks. Or in the case of Facebook, Instagram and other platforms, their own profiles, where they also communicate changes in the service, news or answer questions to users. On the other hand, they would be understood as a promotion of their services, as they collect in Mashable.

However, and in response to user complaints, the current executive director of the company, Elon Musk, has temporarily withdrawn this ban, since there are users who do not link the accounts of other social networks to promote them, but rather as part of the diffusion of his own work, not wanting to rival Twitter.

Given this situation, Musk has stated that the new policy “will adjust to the suspension of accounts only when the ‘main’ purpose of that account is the promotion of competitors, which essentially falls under the no spam rule”, and has anticipated that “there will be a vote on major policy changes.”
