The deliberations took more than two decades; 25 years. And France, Poland and Italy are still opposed to this agreement.

In any case, the agreement will open the doors to a series of commercial benefits for the parties as well as investments, in addition to promoting integration in the international market.

Mercosur is made up of the South American countries Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela. Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Bolivia are in the process of joining.

“The new trade regime involves the reduction of the highest tariffs applied to imports from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, among other places. In exchange, the EU will liberalise most of the access to its market.”

According to Brussels’ calculations, the new framework will allow “European companies to save around 4 billion euros in tariffs each year.”

Exports by small and medium-sized companies will be able to increase thanks to the reduction of bureaucratic procedures. Among the agri-food products of interest to Spain are olive oil, wine, fruit and vegetables, cheese (28%) and pork.

For their part, “EU companies will be able to submit bids for public contracts on equal terms with those of Mercosur. They will have exclusive preferential access to some critical raw materials and organic products.”

This agreement still needs to be approved by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. “In addition, the parts of the agreement that include mixed competences, not exclusive to the EU, will have to be submitted for ratification by the parliaments of the Member States.”

According to the Bloomberg Commodities Spot Index, which analyzes future contracts for 24 items, including food and raw materials, as well as minerals and hydrocarbons, an increase of 5 % was experienced in the first half. The products that gave the greatest impetus to commodity trading and generated profits for investors were coffee, cocoa and oil.

Cocoa, although down from its peak in April, overall rose in value 84% from January to June. For its part, coffee, a key product in the region’s markets, reached a price increase of 22.3 %, leading Bloomberg’s list of the 24 products in the basket analyzed.

In contrast, wheat and corn futures contracts suffered losses in the first half (8.88% and 12.73 %, respectively). One of the main reasons for this decline in the price of corn is the effect of climate change in the United States; and in the case of wheat, as a consequence of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Oil and copper price increased from January to June

With respect to oil, this main source of energy and key in the economies of Latin America, the benchmark WTI crude oil experienced an increase between January and June of 16 %, and it is expected that together with Brent crude oil, prices will average in the second half barrel of $80 and $84, respectively.

The last step in the commodities section is occupied by copper, with gains that represent an increase of 15.4 %. Credicorp Capital’s projections suggest that demand for this mineral, with China as the main market (50 % of world production), will double by 2035.

The growing popularity of cryptomones such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, whose market value has come to quintuplicate in recent times, reaching 3 billion dollars point to a capacity to destabilize markets that it requires approaching with a global regulatory framework, as indicated by the Fund International Monetary (IMF).

According to the calculations of the institution, the market value of these new assets increased up to almost 3 billion dollars last November from about 620,000 million dollars in 2017, although market capitalization had been reduced by 2022 Around around 2 trillion dollars, which still represents an increase of almost four times since 2017.

Likewise, in addition to the greater popularity and adoption of the cryptoactive, the IMF emphasizes that the correlation of these with traditional investments such as equities increased significantly, which limits the perceived benefits of risk diversification and increases the risk of contagion in the financial markets.

In this sense, the institution points out that this increase in the correlation between shares and crypts increases the possibility of contagions between the different kinds of assets, as suggested by the substantial rise of the indirect effects of prices and the volatility of the Bitcoin on the stock markets , and vice versa, between 2020-21 compared to 2017-19.

The largest and considerable joint movement and indirect effects between cryptomers and bags indicate a growing interconnection between the two kinds of assets that allows the transmission of ‘shocks’ with capacity to destabilize financial markets.

“Our analysis suggests that the cryptoactive are no longer outside of the financial system,” says the main financial director and director of the Department of Monetary Markets and Capital of the Institution, Tobias Adrian, for whom, given its relatively high volatility and valuations, Its oscillations could soon raise risks for financial stability.

These preliminary figures were recently released by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

Juan Luis Laya, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, explained that the increase in loads is due to the improvements made to the export process, especially to everything related to permits.

“We have made an effort to simplify the export process; above all, in the case of shrimp, which is the marine item that is most exported in the country (…) We are facilitating the entire permitting process for companies to increase shrimp production in Venezuela by 15 %,” reported the head of the portfolio.

Regional powers

The region with the greatest potential for shrimp production is the state of Zulia, followed by Trujillo and Mérida, for having a coastline on Lake Maracaibo. Other regions that are added are the west with the Falcón state; the East with the states of Anzoátegui, Sucre and Nueva Esparta. According to the figures recorded in previous years, total production in the year is around 25,000 tons.

Shrimp companies in the state of Zulia lead the market and are grouped in the Association of Shrimp Producers of Western Venezuela (Asoproco), led by Fernando Villamizar Esparza, who reported that they plan to export 30,000 tons by the end of 2021.

Asoproco considers that if year-on-year growth is maintained equal to or greater than 20 %, in the next 3 years some 100,000 tons per year will be exported. However, some specialists are more conservative and estimate about 60,000 tons per year, aimed at the markets of “the United States and the European Union together with Russia, Turkey, China and Japan.”

Since last week, the cryptocurrency bitcoin had been presenting strong falls in the market to the point of placing itself at $ 30,000, half of its last peak.

It suffered a colossal decline on May 19, falling from a daily open of around $ 43,000 to a low of $ 30,000.

After reaching this point, the digital asset recovered and again reached $ 40,000 per unit, however there are still no signs of an uptrend again.

The popular digital currency has erased all the profits it made after the announcement by Tesla Inc., which said it would use corporate cash to buy bitcoins and accept it as a form of payment for its vehicles.

Cryptocurrencies tend to be highly volatile due to the degree of speculation that surrounds them and the absence of a valuation method for them, since the market does not have a real certainty of how much they are worth.
