Electrum Bitcoin Wallet has denounced this Tuesday the presence of a malicious application circulating on Google Play with a name very similar to the company through its official Twitter account:

“Public Service Announcement: Attackers have artificially raised @ElectrumWallet’s rating on @GooglePlay (5-star attack). We believe that their objective is to remove our application from the Google Play Store to impersonate us with a malware version of our application.”

The Electrum team explained in detail the attack that according to the description is rated 5 stars where it states: “They are trying to have our application removed from the Play Store for violation of the rules. If they are successful, a search for ‘electrum wallet’ on Google Play will first reflect your malware application.”

When searching for the application in the download area, the interface returns results related to the malicious app, something that should surely generate an alert signal to users.

Another element that draws attention is the date the application was uploaded, specifically April 18. In this sense, the company has called on users not to download the malicious application found on Google Play.

The news was released by the company this Monday, January 18, through the official Twitter account, where the provider announced about said app, reminding users that they should never share their seed phrase with anyone.

The company also provided its users with a generic manual on the use of wallets with Android where it listed the main Trezor applications including: Mycelium, Sentinel or Walleth.

At the time Trezor published the news, the malicious app had more than 1,000 downloads and by now it already had 200 reviews in the app store.

According to a user’s post, “This app is a scam. Never enter your seed phrase into anything other than official Trezor hardware. Anyone who asks for this phrase (besides a physical Trezor) is trying to scam you.”
