Arturo Michelena International Airport in Valencia, Carabobo state, has become Venezuela’s air bridge for international flights following the preventative closure of Simón Bolívar International Airport in La Guaira state.

As is known, the country’s main airport, in Maiquetía, suffered severe structural damage during the earthquakes of June 24, leading to the suspension of air operations. Priority has been given exclusively to receiving flights carrying humanitarian aid and the deployment of emergency logistics in the area.

“This strategic plan aims to redirect regular demand to alternative terminals in the interior of the country that are 100 % operational, as air connectivity has been emergencyly relocated to these alternative terminals.”

Given the current national emergency, the Venezuelan Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (Avavit) published available flight routes and schedules on its social media channels, along with passenger assistance information.

Meanwhile, “airlines continue to adjust their schedules while technical evaluations and recovery work progress at Maiquetía Airport, whose reopening for regular commercial flights still depends on the safety conditions of the infrastructure.”

Fixed-wing aircraft: Two Learjet 31 aircraft, based at the Caracas-Charallave Airport, are dedicated to specialized medical transport, ensuring international standards of safety and speed.

Strategic coordination and deployment

Currently, our technical and medical team is working closely with Civil Protection in La Guaira, the Armed Forces, aeronautical authorities, and personnel stationed in Maiquetía. This inter-institutional synergy is fundamental for the execution of our first helimedical transport, thus consolidating the deployment of Venezuela’s First Aeromedical Command Center.

Venezuela and Colombia signed agreements to restore commercial air traffic between the two nations, in addition to unifying search and rescue procedures in case of accidents.

The civil aviation authorities of Colombia and Venezuela met at the Center for Aeronautical Studies (CEA), in Bogotá. The meeting was chaired by Sergio París Mendoza, General Director of Civil Aeronautics, and Juan Manuel Teixeira Diaz, President of the National Institute of Civil Aviation of Venezuela.

The information collected in a joint statement indicates that the air routes will be Barranquilla – Maiquetía, Bogotá – Maiquetía, Maiquetía – Cúcuta, and San Antonio del Táchira – Cúcuta.

“These letters of operational agreement include the unification of SAR procedures, which consists of providing search and rescue services in emergency situations, in compliance with the regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for Colombia and Venezuela, to in turn, cooperation for training and mutual training ”, reads the statement.

This Thursday, the first vaccination campaign against the coronavirus begins in Venezuela, after the arrival of the first 100,000 Russian Sputnik V vaccines to the country.

This was announced by President Nicolás Maduro at a press conference from the Miraflores Palace in Caracas, where he indicated that one of the first to receive the vaccine will be the country’s medical personnel.

“On Thursday, February 18, we started the vaccination of all health personnel in the country and the personnel that are prioritized”, Maduro said.

On the other hand, he assured that it is planned for the month of April to start with mass vaccination for the inhabitants of Venezuela.

The vaccination plan includes “authorities who, due to their street work, justify their special protection for the State to continue its march, and also the deputies will be vaccinated in this first stage.”

The doses that arrived in the country represent just 1 % of the agreement reached with Russia for the provision of these supplies to combat COVID-19.

In addition to the 10 million doses agreed with Russia, Venezuela has reserved between 1.4 and 2.4 million AstraZeneca vaccines through the Covax system of the World Health Organization (WHO).

No penalty payment

All passengers affected by the pandemic, and who have not been able to fly due to commercial air restrictions in Venezuela, have the possibility of changing their tickets without paying a penalty. Only those who wish to fly through Cancun must cancel the fare difference.

“Several people have told me that other airlines are demanding the payment of a penalty to passengers who could not fly due to the closure of flights. The truth is I am not aware of those cases. We are not doing it, we understand that they did not fly for reasons beyond their control”, said Bracamonte.

Regarding the other destinations served by Avior Airlines (Bogotá, Medellín, Manaus and Lima), Bracamonte pointed out that “as soon as the National Institute of Civil Aeronautics considers it safe to resume commercial air operations to Colombia, Brazil and Peru, we will inform you of the reactivation of our routes to those countries; because at Avior Airlines we are ready to provide the best service to our passengers.”
