Amazon announced last week the start of a global wave of layoffs, which now extends to Spain, where the tech giant will eliminate 1,200 positions in the corporate workforce in Madrid and Barcelona.

Amazon’s goal is to cut 14,000 jobs through what are known as EREs, or Workforce Reduction Plans. In Spain, this will affect the offices of Amazon Digital Spain (Madrid) and Amazon Spain Services (Barcelona). This process will not affect operations staff or employees in other cities in the country.

It’s important to note that the company has approximately 28,000 employees in the European country, so the reduction of 1,200 jobs will affect 4.29% of the workforce.

Amazon justifies the measure with the “need to reduce expenses and offset the over-hiring that occurred during the pandemic, as well as to move towards a more agile organization, with fewer layers and greater accountability, allowing for faster and more efficient management.”
