As of this week, it became the Los Próceres branch, the fifth in the Libertador municipality, along with Sabana Grande, Propatria, Las Ibarras, and El Cementerio.

Due to its location on Avenida Los Próceres, Los Próceres Shopping Center (IPSFA), Third Stage, First Floor, the branch is crucial to Bancamiga’s growth, serving clients and potential clients from El Valle, Coche, Santa Mónica, Los Chaguaramos, and Bello Monte, among other communities in Libertador.

Inaugurated on May 25, 2021, La Rinconada has added 18,800 clients, both individuals and legal entities, who will now have access to a larger, more modern space with access to various transportation lines to conduct their transactions.

The Chairman of the Board of Bancamiga Banco Universal, José Simón Elarba, expressed his satisfaction with the opening on Thursday, August 21, stating, “I am sure it will be an ally for the institution’s growth and will promote the development of the country’s economy through our wide range of services.”

“With this agency, we strengthen Bancamiga’s local presence and consolidate our brand in an emblematic and dynamic area of Caracas, connected to important shopping centers and key points of the city. It’s a space where, in addition to the 18,800 clients from La Rinconada, we will support local individuals, merchants, and entrepreneurs, facilitating their access to essential products and services.”

The ribbon cutting was led by CEO Ariel Martínez and Los Próceres agency manager Luisa López.

Bancamiga will offer its broad financial portfolio, including loans for entrepreneurs, businesses, and vehicles, as well as products such as the Mastercard Debit Card, which, supported by contactless technology, offers various versions of the card to make online purchases, subscribe to streaming services, pay at national and international points of sale, make ATM withdrawals abroad, and enjoy exclusive discounts at partner merchants.

Venezuelans will also be able to visit the Bancamiga Points of Sale at the Los Próceres branch. Developed in partnership with Soluciones Integrales Tecnológicas (SITCA), these points are the only ones on the market that allow for paying and recharging telephone and TV services, playing lotteries, and completing the 5y6 payment process, generating commissions for entrepreneurs and small businesses.

In these first six months of the year, Bancamiga reached one million customers, continued to offer friendly and secure financial solutions, and its Mobile Bancamiga celebrated its second anniversary across the country to reach more Venezuelans and support them on their path to financial inclusion.

This daily effort by more than 1,000 employees across the country enabled total deposits to increase by 127.87 % compared to December 2024, placing Bancamiga as the institution with the highest relative growth in the large stratum.

Year-on-year, deposits from the public experienced a 253.91 % increase, allowing Bancamiga to achieve a 5.45 % market share, ranking sixth in the national ranking and above the annual variation reflected by the SBV and private banks.

Among the range of deposits from the public, foreign currency stands out, a sector where Bancamiga ranks among the top three private banks, with an absorption rate of 13.08 % and 7.54 % of the Venezuelan Banking System.

In June alone, Bancamiga ranked as the bank with the highest proportion of deposits in foreign currency, with 53.01 %. In annual terms, it absorbed 0.85 percentage points of private banking and 0.57 of the SBV.

Increasing financial revenue

To be one of the country’s leading financial institutions in such a competitive market, it is essential to shine. This must be achieved with products that set the pace, as Bancamiga does with its Debit Mastercard, which, supported by contactless technology, allows customers to make online purchases, subscribe to streaming platforms, pay at national and international points of sale, and withdraw from ATMs abroad. The bank explains in a statement.

This also includes innovations such as the tokenization of its cards in its versatile Bancamiga Suite app, which allows for mobile purchases. It also includes its nearly 200,000 modern points of sale across the country, which allow users to pay for and recharge telephone and television services, play the lottery, and stamp their 5y6 cards, among other features.

Thus, by shining in this way, Bancamiga managed to record a semiannual increase in its financial income of 354.23 %, a figure that clearly surpassed the 280.48 % of the SBV, and positioned itself among the top four private banks and the top five in the SBV, with a market share of 10.20 % and 6.53 %, respectively.

This performance supports and consolidates Bancamiga as one of the leading institutions in the Venezuelan financial system, with a semiannual increase of 2,345.27 % in bolivars and 964% in dollars, the highest relative growth in the system in both currencies.

With these results, Bancamiga climbs two positions in terms of profitability, ranking eighth nationwide in June 2025. Year-on-year, the cumulative growth was 1,636.96 %. And to highlight its efficiency and operational solidity, it is worth noting that it posted a return on equity (ROE) of 32.38 % and a return on assets (ROA) of 4.53 %.

There is no doubt that in this first half of 2025, Bancamiga reaffirmed its position as a cutting-edge banking institution, a pioneer in products and services, committed to a smarter, more sustainable future, and which, with its financial solutions, seeks to improve the quality of life of Venezuelan society every day.

In this context, President Luis Arce has indicated that without new financing, it could default.

The main creditors of the South American nation, mired in a political, social, and energy crisis, are the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), the World Bank (WB), and China.

Arce indicated that if parliamentary approval of the international loans it requested from multilateral institutions is not achieved, the country would default.

The lack of foreign currency in Bolivia is critical. Added to this is the electricity crisis and clashes with the political opposition, accused by Arce of blocking international financing.

The president has expressed his concern: “We are trying not to default. We have every intention of paying our debt, but what if we don’t have the resources?”

Currently, “there are $1.8 billion in requests for international funds that have not yet been discussed by legislators. The country needs $2.6 billion by December for fuel imports and foreign debt payments.”

The credit assignment is immediate, with no fees for opening or closing the application. In addition, the loan payment can be made when the beneficiary has the opportunity.

The detail to take into account regarding this service is that “it is necessary to deposit more value in crypto than what is borrowed, and it can be in bitcoin or ethereum. This overcollateralization –the financial term– reveals that the crypto sector still needs extra security support when it approaches traditional finances.”

In any case, Bit2Me Loan offers loans for various interests and projects, such as “buying a house to expanding a business.” Applicants must take into account, however, the risks that could be triggered by a significant drop in the price of the cryptocurrencies used as collateral.

However, it maintained a significant upward trend, with expansions of 3.5 % compared to December and an impressive 215.5 % year-on-year, reaching a total of 54,651.69 million bolivars.

In terms of foreign exchange, the loan portfolio stood at $1,507.22 million at the month-end official exchange rate. This represents an increase of 2.66 % compared to the $1,468.10 million with which it closed December, and an impressive 94.56 % compared to the 774.72 million in January 2023.

In addition, the financial intermediation margin experienced a relative increase of 25.09%, from 30.73 % in January 2023 to 38.44 % in the first month of this year. This represents a significant acceleration compared to the annualised increase of 33.08 % recorded last December.

These indicators of portfolio growth and the intermediation index are commendable, especially considering that the banking sector has faced challenges.

For 28 weeks, since the August 4 cut, the bank has not managed to cover the legal requirements, which has resulted in a deficit that exceeds 10 billion bolivars per week in the last six closures reported by the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV).

The legal deposit requirement has exceeded 35 billion bolivars in each of the last six weeks, while the consolidated bank current account balance has remained at the order of 25 billion.

It is important to note that the intermediation margin does not fully reflect the effort that banks have been making to increase their loan portfolios. In the case of foreign currency deposits, banks have not intermediated more than 10 % of such funds because of the risks associated with foreign currency replenishment in the event of default by debtors.

This move is reportedly aimed at capitalizing on emerging opportunities in the cryptocurrency lending market.

Under the name of Coinbase Prime, the new cryptocurrency lending platform offers an institutional-grade solution for investors in the United States. Coinbase Prime, a full-service brokerage platform, enables institutions to trade and safeguard their assets.

“With this service, institutions can choose to lend digital assets to Coinbase under standardized terms in a product that meets the Regulation D exemption”, the firm said in its statement.

According to documents filed with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), since its launch on August 28, Coinbase clients have already invested $57 million in this lending program, attracting five investors as of 1 of September.

This new Coinbase cryptocurrency lending product follows the suspension of issuance of new loans on Coinbase Borrow in May 2023. This program was designed to allow users to borrow up to 1 million using Bitcoin as collateral.

Importantly, this news comes several months after the US SEC accused Coinbase of allegedly offering and selling unregistered securities in connection with its cryptocurrency staking services, which allow users to earn returns by giving away their cryptocurrencies to the platform. Coinbase defended itself by arguing that it did not share the view that its staking services constitute securities.

The dispute led to the suspension of Coinbase’s staking program in four states: California, New Jersey, South Carolina, and Wisconsin, while legal proceedings continued.

This move by Coinbase comes at a time when the cryptocurrency lending industry is still reeling from last year’s crisis, which saw major companies like BlockFi, Celsius, and Genesis Global file for bankruptcy due to illiquidity caused by the bear market of 2022. Observers of the crypto space consider it critical that the cryptocurrency lending industry learns lessons from these crashes and addresses challenges related to short-term assets and liabilities.

From early hours, Massa held a meeting with Anna Bjerde, Managing Director of Operations of the World Bank, where two financing programs were achieved. One of them, with an allocation of 450 million dollars, focuses on strengthening food security.

The second, of 200 million dollars, is aimed at Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), providing them with access to credit for imports and a rapid settlement of foreign currency for export. These details were shared by Massa at a press conference held at the facilities of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Likewise, in his meeting with Ilan Goldfajn, president of the IDB, additional funds were announced for a total of 650 million dollars, with three key objectives: financing the construction of a bridge between the provinces of Corrientes and Chaco, improving the Salto dam Large shared with Uruguay, and increase exports in the knowledge economy sector. With these initiatives, the amount of additional financing would reach the figure of 1,300 million dollars for Argentina at the end of this year.

Massa emphasized that these credits play a fundamental role not only in reinforcing reserves, which have experienced an increase of 1.7 billion dollars in the last 21 days, but also in supporting development projects.

At a time when Argentina faces annual inflation of more than 100 % and a marked shortage of international reserves, these loans provide respite from the high demand for dollars, which citizens seek as a refuge from price volatility.

These loans correspond to the Expanded Financing Facility (EFF) approved in 2021 and which has undergone a fourth review by the IMF and the Resilience and Sustainability Fund (RSF), which has been revised for the first time since its approval in 2022 and whose objective is to grant financing to carry out long-term reforms that allow to face the climate crisis.

As explained by the Fund, the Costa Rican authorities are making “important advances” in their economic reform agenda and the programs carried out remain “strong”, with “important improvements” in efficiency and orientation to reduce the high poverty rates and increase the formality of employment.

For its part, the fund to advance the climate agenda is also advancing successfully, and Costa Rica has already completed all the reforms committed to prior to this first review. Among others, measures have been taken to incorporate climate considerations in fiscal policy, in infrastructure investments, or in the financial sector.

Likewise, the Costa Rican authorities are also “intensifying” efforts to attract climate financing from both multilateral organizations and the public sector, as well as from the private sector.
