Italy passed a law that criminalizes femicide and established a life sentence for perpetrators.

The Parliament’s decision, announced last Tuesday, “responds to a wave of homicides and crimes of violence directed against women in the country.”

Authorities made the decision by majority vote, with 237 votes, establishing “life imprisonment as the maximum punishment for those who murder a woman out of hatred, discrimination, or for acts of control, possession, or domination based on gender, or as retaliation for a refusal to maintain or continue an intimate relationship.”

The President of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, stated that the law demonstrates profound political unity against violence against women. She added that the government doubled funding for centers and shelters for victims of violence, “promoted an emergency hotline, and implemented innovative educational and awareness initiatives.”

The People’s Court of Ho Chi Minh City, in Vietnam, found two men guilty in the case of kidnapping and theft of USD 1.5 million in Bitcoin.

They were identified as Ho Ngoc Tai and Tran Ngoc Hoang, who now have a life sentence. Another 14 people were also involved, who received sentences between 9 and 19 years in prison.

Those sentenced were found guilty of organizing the kidnapping of a person to then steal $1.5 million in BTC from the victim. The case came to light because cryptocurrencies are not legal in Vietnam and Tai and Hoang had also turned the stolen sum into 18.8 billion VND (about $800,000).

According to the court ruling, “the criminals had to compensate the victim with that amount.”

It was learned that about five years ago the plot of these crimes with digital assets began, buying and selling bitcoin and organizing a criminal gang that included the purchase of vehicles and weapons.
