“Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Samsung, in addition to Surface, will be the first computers to offer a historic change in their user experience,” as they detail, adding that nothing will be the same as the last 30 years.

When any computer decides to opt for Windows and Copilot+, the user experience will be of another level. This was indicated at an event at the Microsoft campus in Redmond, with the presentation of the “new category of Windows computers designed to take even more advantage of Artificial Intelligence: the Copilot+ PCs.”

They are faster and more intelligent devices, they integrate processors that can reach 40+ TOPS (trillion operations per second), they have a battery that offers autonomy for the entire day, as well as access to the most advanced AI models.

With these devices the user can “easily find and remember everything that has been seen on the computer with Recall, generate and edit images with AI almost in real time directly on the device using Cocreator or translate audio from more than 40 languages into English to overcome language barriers with Live Captions.”

These features are responsible for eliminating previous limitations in areas such as “latency, cost to boost productivity, creativity and communicate more effectively.”

They will hit the market starting June 18 incorporating devices from the Microsoft Surface family and from other manufacturers such as Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Samsung with the Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus processors. The price is estimated to be $999.

It was learned that at least “eight global technology companies, including the Lenovo Group and Microsoft, promised today, Monday, to develop more ethical artificial intelligence (AI) in accordance with the United Nations framework.”

“GSMA, INNIT, Lenovo Group, LG AI Research, Mastercard, Microsoft, Salesforce and Telefónica signed an agreement during the 2nd World Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the Slovenian city of Kranj”, according to the media.

Audrey Azoulay, director general of UNESCO, described the agreement as a concrete commitment by global technology companies. Furthermore, “he urged all technology firms to follow the example of these eight companies and encouraged an alliance between the public and private sectors in the development of AI for the common good.”

According to the document, technology companies must guarantee human rights in the processes of design, development, purchase, sale and use of AI.

On the other hand, they will be subject to safety standards, as well as mechanisms to identify the adverse effects of AI and those necessary for timely prevention according to national legislation.

It is important to remember that the “UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence” was the first in the world and remains the only regulatory framework on AI.

Lenovo’s Budapest plant opened in June 2022 to support customers across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and address infrastructure needs for high-end PC workstations, storage systems and servers.

As of June 2023, the factory has provided solutions to more than a thousand customers in 69 countries, while its scale and pace of operations have accelerated over the past year, as the company has indicated in a press release.

This factory has allowed the technology firm to distribute one million units, a figure that represents “a sample of the internal and external collaboration” that has taken place in the last year between employees and customers, as pointed out by the Lenovo Factory manager, Szabolcs Zolyomi.

“We have been able to respond to customer needs more effectively, with greater efficiency and control over product development and supply chain operations, all while continuing to uphold our commitment to sustainability and supporting the local community”, added the manager.

Lenovo explains that it built the Budapest manufacturing facility with sustainability in mind, and since its inauguration it has improved thermal insulation, completed the installation of lighting sensor systems, and optimized the use of waste heat from air compressors.

The Hungary factory is part of Lenovo’s global production network, distributed among 35 locations in eight regions to serve customers in 180 markets, including Argentina, Brazil, China, Hungary, India, Japan, Mexico, and the United States.

Since then, it has provided added capabilities to customers running some of the largest supercomputers in Europe, including the Barcelona Supercomputing Center in Spain, the Leibniz Supercomputing Center in Germany and SURF in the Netherlands.

From January 2019 to December 2021 Lenovo used more than 18,750 tons of recycled plastic in the manufacture of its ThinkVision monitors, which has led it to exceed the figure of 61.5 million monitors with recycled materials offered for sale in everyone.

At the beginning of 2023 it was the first manufacturer of PCs and smartphones, as well as one of the first 139 companies in the world, with a goal of net-zero emissions validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and continues to work towards that in its new product lines, such as the ThinkCentre neo family of monitors, have the lowest possible carbon footprint.

“As a global technology leader, Lenovo has been committed to reducing its emissions for more than a decade,” said Yuanqing Yang, Lenovo’s president, who pledged to continue advancing in this regard. To achieve this, Lenovo focuses on making the entire life cycle of its devices more sustainable, from manufacturing or packaging to distribution and recycling.

Along this path, it also has partners such as Microsoft, which has announced significant improvements at the sustainability level in Windows 11 Pro, with tools that help move towards new hybrid work models, reducing the impact on the carbon footprint. Hardware and software go hand in hand to make meetings more efficient, with tools such as Microsoft Teams, or carrying out changes in the default power settings for sleep mode and screen off, among other new features.

Innovation marks the path of Lenovo’s new products (Reference image source: Lenovo, Europa Press / dpa)

Lenovo’s most efficient monitors

The new line of monitors is an example of Lenovo’s efforts in this regard. A total of 21 of the company’s monitors have the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient certification, which highlights those products that represent the best innovations of the year in terms of energy savings and environmental protection.

These devices have, among other technologies, an integrated intelligent engine that dynamically detects the power consumption of compatible USB devices and intuitively allocates power between the different connections of the monitor based on the use made of them, achieving savings of up to 7 % energy thanks to this process.

They also incorporate two types of sensors: one for ambient light, which reduces the brightness of the screen depending on the light in the environment, and another for motion detection, which allows the screen to be turned on or off automatically depending on whether the user is present or not, achieving between them a saving of 64 % of energy consumption.

Microsoft has also made progress in its efforts to achieve more efficient PC performance. In this sense, when the devices are plugged in, turned on, connected to the Internet and regional carbon intensity data is available, Windows Update schedules installations at specific times of the day, moving excess energy consumption to the moment in which energy production proceeds from a higher proportion of renewable sources.

Less volatile organic compounds in the paint

Another aspect that Lenovo pays attention to is painting. The company’s efforts to use less volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ThinkVision monitors have saved 600 million cubic meters of clean air per year and reduced 120 kilograms of VOCs/year.

The paint can be harmful and polluting due to these gases, which contain chemical substances. A 27-inch monitor contains about 64 mg of VOCs if it is made of paint. Therefore, most ThinkVision monitors are now manufactured without added paint, effectively reducing the emission of these gases into the atmosphere.

“Sustainability is not necessarily a finish line, but rather a continuous process of improvement. Therefore, the company seeks to reduce the environmental impact of packaging and logistics through continuous optimization of design, choice of materials, processing and the life cycle,” they explain from the company. The design of removable and flexible packaging, for example, makes transport more efficient: “Less weight means less CO2 emissions in the transport process.”

Like Lenovo, Microsoft has taken this effort to save energy to all its products and services, incorporating other tools, such as the ‘Sustainability Calculator’, which allows its customers to know carbon emissions with complete transparency resulting from the storage and management of data in the cloud.

Specifically, Lenovo technology helps Formula 1 with its on-site data collection solutions, improving data storage at events. In a sport where a hundredth of a second can make the difference between one team and another, Lenovo offers the competition a wide range of portable and desktop devices, as well as ThinkSmart monitors, tablets and intelligent collaboration solutions, supporting F1 operations both on the track and in the headquarters offices.

“We partnered with Formula 1 to implement Lenovo’s smartest solutions across the organization, helping push the boundaries of what’s possible and transform the racing experience. Formula 1 is focused on its digital transformation and continues to amaze and delighting their fans,” said Luca Rossi, president of Lenovo’s Intelligent Devices Group, upon completion of this collaboration, which began in 2022 and continues into this new season.

Technology designed for F1 fans

Lenovo’s High Performance Computing solutions are supporting broadcast video and broadcast control applications. Supercomputing technology promises to take processes to another level, which will have a direct impact on the fan experience.

High-throughput workstations will also be leveraged to support the most demanding activities, such as CAD design and graphics creation and editing. In the same way, Formula 1 is considering the use of augmented reality and virtual reality solutions to deepen, improve and expand its offer to the consumer.

A Formula 1 Grand Prix presents a spectacle like no other sporting event on earth. But the speed, precision and performance that fans see on the track wouldn’t be possible without a great deal of collaborative work that takes place behind the scenes throughout the year, and that features technology at its heart.

“This partnership is built on our shared passion for innovation, performance and the spirit of winning. Together, Lenovo and Formula 1 will push the limits of technology to help shape a faster, smarter and more sustainable future”, concludes Yang Yuanqing, Chairman and CEO of Lenovo.

The configuration of a new device also takes advantage of this breadth to display the options in two columns: one with the configuration and another where the changes made are reflected, as Google has shared on its official blog.

The taskbar has also been optimized to facilitate multitasking, with a split screen mode that allows you to load two applications at the same time or even modify the area that each of them will occupy.

This operating system will later come to compatible equipment from brands such as Samsung, Lenovo and Microsoft.

What’s new for 2022

Lenovo’s official distributor, Celexx, offers its innovative tools that will allow maximizing and automating the management processes of all its strategic allies.

One of its novelties for 2022 is the Lenovo Partner Hub platform that aims to “simplify and personalize the constant work of Lenovo partners”; offering specific information, adequate prices and registration of opportunities.

Pablo García Serrano, channel manager for the Lenovo region, highlights that this platform is “ideal for our partners who wish to continue offering updates and highly competitive services to all customers.”

It is important to highlight that Celexx seeks to obtain world leadership not only in the PC area but also in the server area, trying to establish itself as a benchmark when it comes to thinking about technological advances.

Lenovo, together with Celexx, recently held the event called Smart Night in Venezuela, with which they resumed face-to-face activities with organizations to present the novelties available in the market for 2022.
