The Trump Administration included a $5.6 billion net cut to NASA’s spending in the 2027 budget.

Microsoft confirmed that the Microsoft 365 and Office 365 office suites for business customers will drop the Teams productivity solution in Europe, offering new lower-priced plans and Teams independently.

The European Commission announced in July the start of a formal investigation to determine whether Microsoft violated competition rules in the region by linking its Teams video conferencing and productivity application with the installation of Office software, a situation denounced by its competitor Slack in July 2020 against Brussels.

Official Gazette No. 43 Ordinary, released on Tuesday, April 26, published the resolution approved by the Central Bank of Cuba, where Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies services and platforms are authorized on the island.

The approved legislation provides for the delivery of licenses to natural or legal persons who wish to operate services with bitcoin and virtual assets as a business. Said law will enter into force as of May 16 of this year.

Cuba has historically been characterized by its restrictive policies on the economic and financial sector. However, with the approval of this new law, the Caribbean island “takes another step forward to adopt Bitcoin and its industry.”

On the other hand, the new legislation will allow local and foreign companies to emerge to operate with cryptocurrencies and offer their services in the country.

Central bank responsible for granting licenses

In accordance with the provisions of the Official Gazette, the Central Bank will be the only body authorized to grant licenses, both to natural and legal persons, who wish to operate services with Bitcoin and virtual assets.

Likewise, it indicates that the financial entity before granting the license must evaluate “the legality, opportunity and socioeconomic interest of the initiative, the characteristics of the project, the responsibility of the applicants and their experience in the activity. The Central Bank of Cuba issues the license, after consulting the Cryptoactive Group”.

Due to the novelty and experimental nature of these activities, the licenses granted will last for one year, extendable for a second year. The law also establishes that “virtual asset service providers cannot cease their operations without authorization from the Bank.”

The South Korean Legislation and Justice Parliamentary Commission plans to approve the reforms to the Telecommunications Companies Law, which includes aspects related to the collection of commissions. Companies like Google and Apple will not be able to require software developers to use their payment systems, no longer getting commissions for “in-app purchases”.

If the commission approves the legislative reform on Tuesday, also known as the “anti-Google law”, it will be submitted to a final vote next Wednesday and those would be the first restrictions that technology companies would face by one of the strongest economies globally.

The law is focused on “application store operators with dominant positions in the market”, and parliamentarians, since mid-2020, have been pushing “the question of the structure of commission charges.”

If it becomes law, developers will have different options and will be able to select which independent payment systems they want to use.

Worldwide, both Google and Apple have received criticism and harsh criticism for demanding that developers use the payment systems of their companies, which charge up to 30 % commission for each of the purchases made.

Kwon Se-hwa, CEO of the Korea Internet Corporation Association, a non-profit group representing Korean technology companies, noted in the case of game applications, “Google has forced application developers to use its own payment system (…) and wants to extend its policy to other applications such as music or cartoons.”

Emilio Saldaña, who also participated in the event, said: “The world is a laboratory on new financial technologies. 86 % of central banks are evaluating how their national currencies interact with Bitcoin. It would be very interesting to see Mexico set an example.”
