Last Wednesday, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held a meeting with the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner, the Innovation Party (Ishin), in which she announced her intention to dissolve Parliament and call for early elections on January 23.

That day will be the regular session of the Japanese parliament. The prime minister reportedly indicated January 27 or February 3 as likely dates for the campaign, with the election taking place on February 8 or 15.

This information was confirmed by LDP Secretary-General Shunichi Suzuki, who stated: “Prime Minister Takaichi communicated her intention to dissolve the House of Representatives during the Diet’s regular session.”

Although Takaichi, the first woman to lead the archipelago, enjoys a high approval rating (up to 62 %), her plan for early elections faces criticism from opposition parties, “who believe it could delay the approval of the initial budget proposal for fiscal year 2026, which begins in April, amid persistent inflation and stagnant wages.”
