Among the countries that will achieve the highest economic growth are Argentina (5 %), Panama (4.2 %), Paraguay (4 %), the Dominican Republic (3.7 %), Guatemala (3.6 %), and Costa Rica (3.5 %), according to the report presented this Tuesday.

On the other hand, the nations that will experience more moderate growth, ECLAC mentions Honduras (3.2 %), Nicaragua (3.1 %), Peru (3.1 %), Uruguay (2.8 %), Colombia (2.5 %), Chile (2.4 %), El Salvador (2.4 %), Brazil (2.3 %), and Venezuela (2 %).

The countries that are lagging the most include Bolivia (1.5 %), Ecuador (1.5 %), and Mexico (0.3 %). They are joined by Cuba and Haiti, where the economy will decline, according to the organization, to -1.5 % and -2.3 %.

According to the ECLAC report, “the countries of the region face the urgent need to accelerate the mobilization of resources for development in order to avoid another lost decade, in a complex and unfavorable international context.”

In this regard, it urges the nations of Latin America and the Caribbean to implement “a transformative fiscal policy, greater private investment, and renewed international cooperation, along with strong and agile institutions.”

In the case of Latin America and the Caribbean, it would be 2.5 %.

The forecasts of the international organization are moderate, since it takes into account aspects that directly affect the economic recovery of peoples, such as armed conflicts, inflation or political instability, considered persistent risks.

In this sense, the IMF mentions the United States, China, Germany, France, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina among the main world economies.

According to the IMF, the US economy “is doing very well, with a solid labor market and private demand that remains robust.”

In the case of China, it is facing an increase in trade tensions. Germany, for its part, ended 2024 with its second consecutive year of recession. And France is experiencing an internal political crisis that is slowing its growth.

Regarding the situation in LA and the Caribbean, the IMF places Brazil’s growth at 2.2 %, Mexico at +1.4 % and Argentina at 5 %. “Overall, the economy of Latin America and the Caribbean will grow 2.5 % this year and 2.7 % in 2026, the same as forecast in October,” the organization indicates.

The organization now has 22 member countries and is emerging as the “development bank with the greatest presence in the region, which will translate into greater support for green and sustainable development projects.”

The inclusion of the Bahamas as a new member occurs after completing all the requirements to become a “Series C Shareholder,” which will grant it access to “agile, flexible and innovative financing to support sustainable and inclusive development initiatives.”

According to Sergio Díaz-Granados, CAF’s Executive President, the decision was made after meetings with Prime Minister Philip Davis and other local authorities, aimed at providing more support for the development of The Bahamas and the entire region.

“As a development partner rooted in the region, we understand the unique challenges faced by small island developing states in the Caribbean and the urgency of addressing the effects of climate change, financial constraints and the need for greater investments in connectivity and resilient infrastructure. We are willing, as we have done with all of our shareholder countries, to collaborate with the government and other stakeholders to build a sustainable and prosperous future for The Bahamas,” Díaz-Granados stressed.

“At the end of 2023, the region’s fintech platforms reached a record of 3,069 companies distributed in 26 countries. Compared to 2017, this growth represents an increase of more than 340% in the number of fintechs in the region,” indicates the IDB.

Brazil, Mexico and Colombia together host 57 % of the total fintechs in Latin America, mainly in the “payments and remittances (21 % of the total companies in the region), loans (19 %) and business finance management” segments. (13 %).”

The growth is the result of efforts in these countries to serve underbanked people and companies or those that are not yet banked, demonstrating a marked interest in financial inclusion in the region.

According to the report, by 2023, “Brazil and Mexico maintained their leadership position, hosting 722 (23.53 % of the total companies) and 618 (20.14 %) fintech ventures, respectively,” totaling almost 44 % of total fintech companies in Latin America and the Caribbean. They are followed by Colombia with 409 fintech companies (13.33 %), Argentina with 312 (10.17 %) and Chile with 305 (9.94 %), for a total between them of 33.44 %. So “the five countries concentrate 77.1 % of the total fintech companies in the region.”

Other countries stand out, with less fintech development, such as Peru (5.31 %), Ecuador (3.03 %), Dominican Republic (2.12 %), Uruguay (1.69 %), Costa Rica (1.56 %). and Guatemala (1.11 %), which represent 14.8 % of the total. They are followed by Panama, Bahamas, Paraguay, El Salvador, Bolivia, Jamaica, Honduras, Venezuela, Belize, Barbados, Nicaragua, Guyana, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname, which add 8.1 % to the sector.

The progress of the countries of the region in the fintech segment is based on their interest in responding to the needs of the unbanked, strengthening financial inclusion, promoting the diversification of financing sources, and advancing in regulation and innovation. , with firm steps in “regulatory sandboxes and technological supervision (Suptech), thus promoting the development of the fintech ecosystem and the adoption of digital financial services.”

The organizations will prepare a series of general tourism investment guidelines that will be applied in five countries on the continent: Ecuador, Uruguay, Panama, El Salvador and Barbados.

In addition, both institutions will cooperate to attract foreign direct investment towards sustainable tourism initiatives in Latin America, with the commitment to “accelerate economic recovery and foster sustainability and resilience throughout the sector.”

This was recognized by the Secretary General of the UNWTO, Zurab Pololikashvili, adding that the main objective of this alliance is, beyond promoting tourism investment in the region, “to direct it towards projects and initiatives that make the greatest difference.”

The executive president of CAF, Sergio Díaz-Granados, has highlighted that the Development Bank of Latin America is the first multilateral institution to sign the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism, and has ensured that this alliance with the UNWTO will allow it to promote a more sustainable and regenerative tourism in the Latin American region.

This Monday, the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Alicia Bárcena, has launched a proposal for the benefit of economic recovery in Latin American and Caribbean countries, based on environmentally sustainable bases and where equality prevails.

In this regard, Bárcena urged nations to work in new internal and international political coalitions where cooperations contribute in an unprecedented way in order to sustain a satisfactory change for the benefit of the population’s lifestyle.

The senior official intervened as a special guest at the XXII Forum of Ministers of the Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean, where she assured: “The scientific community has constantly warned us about the seriousness of the environmental issue. We have exceeded critical planetary thresholds exceeding the capacity to load of the natural base that sustains us.”

Ecosystem in decline

At the event organized by the Government of Barbados, the executive stated that “47 % of natural ecosystems are deteriorated, 25 % of species are in danger of extinction and, perhaps the most worrying thing, is the destruction of the ecological integrity of key systems that puts the diet of the future at risk.”

According to the multiple impacts generated by the pandemic on a global scale, Bárcena reaffirmed his commitment to comply with the call of the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, that financing be an option for adaptation which is increased by 20 % to 50 %.
