ARM Holdings is currently developing the RISC architecture – for Reduced Instruction Set Computer –, which is used in stand-alone units and can be found in portable electronic devices.

This indicates that, traditionally, it has sold its designs to chip manufacturers, instead of “getting directly involved in the development and production of semiconductors”, as the Financial Times recalls.

This will soon change since, according to this same newspaper, it plans to show “the capabilities of its designs to a broader market.” After carrying out a series of product tests together with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and Samsung, in the last six months it would have been working on a “more advanced” chip.

To do this, ARM has created a solutions engineering team, which will lead the development of these platform prototypes for mobile terminals, computers, laptops and other electronic devices; a job for which it plans to collaborate with manufacturing partners, according to sources connected to the company.

They have also indicated that the company will continue to focus its efforts on improving the performance and security of the designs, as well as strengthening developer access to its products.

Total shipments reached 56.9 million units, representing a return to pre-coronavirus pandemic patterns after growth experienced between 2020 and 2021. According to IDC, a technology consultancy, this downward trend has continued in recent quarters, culminating in a 16.5 % decline in 2022. The top five companies in the market experienced year-on-year declines of between 24 % and 40 % through March 2023.

Lenovo remains the market leader, with a 22.4 % share and 12.7 million shipments, although it is down 30.3 % compared to the previous year. HP occupies the second position, with 21.1 % of the market and 12 million units sold, which represents a decrease of 24.2 %.

Dell Technologies, in third place, has shipped 9.5 million units and accounts for 16.7 % of the total after a 31 % decline. In fourth position, Apple owns 7.2 % of the market and has shipped 4.1 million units, representing a decrease of 40.5 %. Asus is in fifth place, with 6.8 % of the market and 3.9 million computers sold, representing a decrease of 30.3 %.

Although PC shipments are expected to continue to decline in the near term, they are expected to return to growth by the end of the year if the global economy improves and consumers opt to replace their devices.

Moving from a warm environment to one with a very low temperature could cause the smartphone not to turn on, to mention the device most used in daily life. But the effect could be greater if due to the cold in open spaces moisture enters the internal elements, causing condensation or corrosion.

As an initial protection measure, it is recommended to carry the smartphone in a cloth cover that allows it to be kept at an adequate temperature for proper operation. On the other hand, it is also recommended, when changing the environment, to wait a few minutes for the device to adapt naturally and then turn it on.

Sudden temperature changes can have a high impact on these devices. “Going from the cold outside to an interior where the heating is very high” is a very common example. This action, which is normal for the user, could generate problems in the medium and long term, and even irreversible damage, due to “sulfation and corrosion,” according to PcComponentes experts.

A simple tip to warm up the equipment is to warm it up with your own hands before turning it on, and to prevent it from restarting on its own or simply not loading data and applications correctly, or affecting battery performance.

In the case of computers, both office and home laptops, their internal components are highly sensitive to low temperatures. Batteries, hard drives, for example, must be extremely careful of shocks between high and low temperatures, whether natural or artificial.

The first terminals with Intel chips will be manufactured by the companies Acer, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo, LG, MSI, NEC and Samsung and based on a “hybrid performance architecture of the brand, with a combination of performance cores (P cores) and efficient cores (E cores),” the company explained in a statement.

P-series and U-series feature 14-core, 6-core P, and 8-core E architecture, Intel Iris Xe graphics developed with up to 96 execution units, memory support for DDR5/LPDDR5 and DDR4/LPDDR4, and scaling with multi-threaded performance 70% faster. With this architecture, workloads, video calls, browsing, photo editing, are distributed in the most suitable core, for optimal multitasking with Intel Thread Director technology in the Windows 11 operating system, allowing better CPU performance.

The chips have twice the performance for 3D rendering, with greater productivity in photo editing and 30% faster Intel WiFi 6E technology, which facilitate integration and wireless performance, reliability, and responsiveness. Additionally, they have Intel’s universal cable connectivity system, Thunderbolt 4, and Intel IPU 6.0, facilitating very high quality images and videoconferences.

Intel-Evo smart collaboration

The company also announced that Intel Evo-branded notebook designs will be subjected to intense workloads, explaining that the platform will check system requirements such as battery life, as well as the latest update called Intelligent Collaboration that ensures better experience “with artificial intelligence in collaborative applications such as video conferencing”.

The company estimates more than 100 Intel Evo verified systems during 2022 with devices that for the first time include foldable screens and 12th Gen Intel Core H-series designs. It is also expected that Thunderbolt monitors, docks, storage and Bluetooth headsets come together to the line of accessories that are part of the program, with brands such as Poly, Anker, Kensington, Dell, HP, Belkin, Samsung, Sabrent or OWC.

This operating system gives priority to the cloud, in order to serve teachers who need a simple environment, with easy access to the content that is taught in classes, as the company announced in a statement.

Windows 11 SE is designed for students in grades K-8, that is, for children between 5-14 years old, who use a laptop provided by the school or college. Therefore, one of the main differences with respect to Windows 11 is that it has an interface that helps avoid distractions.

It features a simplified design so that students can concentrate during class, as Microsoft has removed the multiple Snap Layouts features of Windows 11 and adjusts the windows to provide the full-screen version of those applications.

Safe experience

On the other hand, in Windows 11 SE, applications can only be installed by IT administrators to ensure that students have a safe experience. In this way, users will not have access to the Microsoft Store nor will they be able to download applications from the Internet at will.

Although the device has a number of applications installed as standard by the manufacturer, other apps can continue to be used through the Microsoft Edge browser, without the need to download and install them.

Some of the standard apps on Windows 11 SE devices are Teams, Office, OneNote, Minecraft for Education, and Flipgrid, which IT administrators don’t have to install separately.

Along with this launch, Microsoft has detailed which are the devices that can be used with this operating system, among which are Lenovo 100w Gen3, Acer TravelMate B3 or Dell Latitude 3120.

This February 5, the billionaire of the Twitter technology platform, Jack Dorsey, announced the activation of his own bitcoin node, which he runs from his computer.

In the publication it could be read: “running bitcoin” next to the capture that only showed 2 % of what corresponds to the synchronization in the block chain, until now.

The businessman explained that the execution is carried out by the configuration of the node using a Macbook M1 chip, the last in the line of processors for Apple laptops and before this he tweeted: “starting from scratch to build in M1 first.”

Bitcoin nodes differ from miners in that they do not compete for a share of the block rewards. Indeed, each node hosts another immutable copy of the blockchain network, which helps to bring more overall security to the network.

According to recent data, the number of full bitcoin nodes in operation has fluctuated lately, reaching between 7,000 and 11,000.
