Component and processor designer ARM Holdings is preparing its own “most advanced” semiconductor prototype, work for which it will partner with manufacturing partners, sources close to the company have told the Financial Times.

ARM Holdings is currently developing the RISC architecture – for Reduced Instruction Set Computer –, which is used in stand-alone units and can be found in portable electronic devices.

This indicates that, traditionally, it has sold its designs to chip manufacturers, instead of “getting directly involved in the development and production of semiconductors”, as the Financial Times recalls.

This will soon change since, according to this same newspaper, it plans to show “the capabilities of its designs to a broader market.” After carrying out a series of product tests together with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and Samsung, in the last six months it would have been working on a “more advanced” chip.

To do this, ARM has created a solutions engineering team, which will lead the development of these platform prototypes for mobile terminals, computers, laptops and other electronic devices; a job for which it plans to collaborate with manufacturing partners, according to sources connected to the company.

They have also indicated that the company will continue to focus its efforts on improving the performance and security of the designs, as well as strengthening developer access to its products.

According to IDC, a technology consultancy, this downward trend has continued in recent quarters, culminating in a 16.5 % decline in 2022. The top five companies in the market experienced year-on-year declines of between 24 % and 40 % through March 2023.

Lenovo remains the market leader, with a 22.4 % share and 12.7 million shipments, although it is down 30.3 % compared to the previous year. HP occupies the second position, with 21.1 % of the market and 12 million units sold, which represents a decrease of 24.2 %.

Dell Technologies, in third place, has shipped 9.5 million units and accounts for 16.7 % of the total after a 31 % decline. In fourth position, Apple owns 7.2 % of the market and has shipped 4.1 million units, representing a decrease of 40.5 %. Asus is in fifth place, with 6.8 % of the market and 3.9 million computers sold, representing a decrease of 30.3 %.

Although PC shipments are expected to continue to decline in the near term, they are expected to return to growth by the end of the year if the global economy improves and consumers opt to replace their devices.

ExpertBook B9 OLED (B9403CVA) is an ultralight design laptop aimed at business executives, manufactured with “the lightest metal alloy on the planet”, high-quality magnesium and lithium, as specified by the company, which also gives it greater durability, passing US MIL-STD-810H military grade tests.

This 14-inch laptop is powered by the 13th generation Intel Core vPro processor and up to 64GB of memory, and integrates an intelligent cooling system to increase performance by 36 %. It comes with Windows 11 Pro and multiple security layers, including optional TPM 2.0.

For video calls, it integrates a high-quality webcam, speakerphone and microphones, and a 16:10 aspect ratio OLED display with a 90 % screen-to-body ratio, with low blue light emissions.

The company has stressed that the manufacturing process followed in this equipment reduces material waste by 29 % and production time up to 75 % to maximize energy efficiency and limit environmental impact.

ASUS also offers laptops for the education sector

For the education sector, the company has introduced two new BR1102 models (BR1102C and BR1102F), featuring a compact, modular design and a TÜV-certified anti-glare dynamic display with a wide viewing angle.

Also, available in a 360 degree convertible format, BR1102 offers a compact design with an 11.6-inch screen so it can be carried in any backpack. It is resistant to drops, bumps and daily wear and tear. It also features a spill-proof keyboard and a scratch (and tamper) resistant exterior.

Powered by a 12th generation Intel Core processor and Windows 11 Education, it offers up to 10 hours of battery life, high-speed connectivity, a 13-megapixel camera with noise reduction and a cover to hide it.

The BR1102 is also built with a sustainable, low-maintenance design; uniform bolts reduce part loss and the modular design makes it flexible in various learning environments.

ASUS has highlighted the proprietary Antimicrobial Guard solution on the keyboard, which is verified by ISO to inhibit bacterial growth by more than 99 % over a 24-hour period, helping to keep laptop surfaces clean and hygienic.

The chips have twice the performance for 3D rendering, with greater productivity in photo editing and 30% faster Intel WiFi 6E technology, which facilitate integration and wireless performance, reliability, and responsiveness. Additionally, they have Intel’s universal cable connectivity system, Thunderbolt 4, and Intel IPU 6.0, facilitating very high quality images and videoconferences.

The company also announced that Intel Evo-branded notebook designs will be subjected to intense workloads, explaining that the platform will check system requirements such as battery life, as well as the latest update called Intelligent Collaboration that ensures better experience “with artificial intelligence in collaborative applications such as video conferencing”.

The company estimates more than 100 Intel Evo verified systems during 2022 with devices that for the first time include foldable screens and 12th Gen Intel Core H-series designs. Microsoft has presented its new Windows 11 SE operating system, designed specifically for use in education and for students, with which it intends to compete with Chromebooks, laptops that use ChromeOS.

Windows 11 SE is designed for students in grades K-8, that is, for children between 5-14 years old, who use a laptop provided by the school or college. Therefore, one of the main differences with respect to Windows 11 is that it has an interface that helps avoid distractions.

It features a simplified design so that students can concentrate during class, as Microsoft has removed the multiple Snap Layouts features of Windows 11 and adjusts the windows to provide the full-screen version of those applications.

Safe experience

On the other hand, in Windows 11 SE, applications can only be installed by IT administrators to ensure that students have a safe experience. In this way, users will not have access to the Microsoft Store nor will they be able to download applications from the Internet at will.

Although the device has a number of applications installed as standard by the manufacturer, other apps can continue to be used through the Microsoft Edge browser, without the need to download and install them.

Some of the standard apps on Windows 11 SE devices are Teams, Office, OneNote, Minecraft for Education, and Flipgrid, which IT administrators don’t have to install separately.

The 11th generation Intel Core-H processors, codenamed Tiger Lake-H, are led by the i9-11980HK, which improves performance in notebook computers and reaches speeds of up to 5.0 GHz.

These processors are designed to enhance the gaming experience. Manufactured with a 10-nanometer process and SuperFin technology, they include up to eight cores and 16 threads, as the company reported in a statement. With them, Intel offers gamers higher frequencies, lower latencies and faster loads thanks to the CPU directly accessing the high-speed GDDR6 memory included in the graphics card.

Compared to the previous generation, it offers 2.5 times the PCIe bandwidth and “three times the total PCIe bandwidth compared to other processors in the industry,” according to Intel.
