The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, considers that the launch of the China-Greece Year of Culture and Tourism is a great opportunity to advance bilateral relations and trade cooperation in different sectors, as well as the increase in Chinese tourists, once the Covid-19 pandemic is over.

During his meeting with the Councilor of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, Wang Yi, Mitsotakis ratified the importance that his country attaches to relations with the Asian giant, also highlighting that thanks to “joint efforts” it has been possible to successfully launch the Piraeus project.

Additionally, the Greek prime minister highlighted the advances of China in the protection of the environment, for which his country could expand cooperation agreements in “green development, scientific and technological innovation, and the joint fight against global challenges such as climate change,” said Mitsotakis.

While the Minister of Foreign Affairs of China was emphatic in highlighting the ties of brotherhood that unites his country with Greece and expressed his desire and commitment to promote the exchange of different economic projects and impact on the development of both countries.

For Wang, promoting the Port of Piraeus to become a world port is of great interest, as well as increasing the “development of the construction of the China-Europe Land-Sea Express Line and expanding cooperation in new areas such as renewable energy.”

Multipolar relations

Another aspect addressed by the representatives of Greece and China was the relationship between the European Union and China. The representative of China pointed out that there were no “geopolitical conflicts of interest” because both countries agree with multipolarization, the predominance of democracy in international relations, as well as respect for authority and the role played by the United Nations in addressing the differences or conflicts that some countries may present at any time.

According to Wang, China and Europe are “not rivals.” “They are partners” and between the two predominates cooperation and mutual respect.
