On Thursday, April 3, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Iraq, Algeria, Kazakhstan, and Oman decided to maintain the increase in production in May, at 411,000 barrels of oil per day.

“Oil prices, which had already lost more than 4 % following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of imposing tariffs on his trading partners, deepened their decline,” the statement said. On the other hand, OPEC+ also announced that there will be another 3.65 million bpd in production cuts through the end of 2026 to support the market.

The eight OPEC+ members had considered increasing production by 135,000 bpd next month “as part of a plan to gradually unwind their most recent layer of cuts.”

However, at last week’s virtual meeting, they approached their decision differently. Upon learning of the measure, OPEC justified the decision by citing “the continuation of healthy market fundamentals and the positive market outlook,” which “includes the increase originally planned for May, in addition to two monthly increases.”

The eight member countries will meet again on May 5 to decide on the production quota for the month of June.

The circular issued by the CMA also states that local regulators will not be able to grant licenses to companies to offer virtual asset services as part of their business operations.

However, it is important to mention that this prohibition does not affect securities and other financial instruments that are regulated by the Central Bank of Kuwait and the CMA itself, which are excluded from this restrictive measure.

The CMA warns customers about the risks associated with cryptocurrencies, noting that they have no legal status and lack the backing of any official entity. Furthermore, since they are not tied to any asset or issuer, their prices are often driven by speculation, making them highly volatile and prone to significant falls.

The issued circular also highlights that the penalties for violating Kuwait’s anti-money laundering laws are clearly stipulated in Article 15 of Law No. 106 of 2013, and are expected to be rigorously enforced.

This ban marks a significant shift in Kuwait’s position regarding cryptocurrencies and shows the growing concern of financial authorities about the potential impact of these virtual currencies on the country’s economic stability. From now on, citizens and companies must comply with this new regulation to avoid facing the established sanctions.

This reduction is in addition to the one previously announced at the end of 2022, after the agreement between the OPEC member countries.

The Arab nations that have made this decision have indicated that this term was reached in conversation with other members of the organization, although they did not provide additional details.

In detail, “Saudi Arabia will apply an additional reduction of half a million barrels per day, the Emirates 144,000 barrels per day, Kuwait 128,000 barrels per day, Iraq 211,000 and Oman 40,000.”

These reductions in oil production, as the main objective, contribute to market stability, in addition to “achieving a balance between supply and demand” in the global arena.
