The UK announced on Monday, June 15, a ban on social media use by those under 16 as a measure to protect children from online dangers.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who added that they will monitor children’s communications in digital chats to protect them from their vulnerability on these platforms.

The affected social media platforms are: TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Reddit, Facebook, X, Threads, Snapchat, Twitch, and Kick.

Starmer indicated that “the decision was not taken lightly, but rather took into account parents’ concerns about minors’ access to these networks.”

The measure has the full support of the House of Commons but still needs to be approved by Parliament.
