In his annual report, traditionally devoted to an issue of relevance to the federal justice system, Roberts provided an analysis of how technologies, including AI, have modernized justice in recent decades. They questioned the future role of human judges, predicting that, although they will continue to be needed, judicial work, especially in trials, will be significantly altered by AI.

Roberts anticipated a change in court operations and underscored the importance of judges understanding the role of this technology in the cases they handle. It also projected increased access to information for lawyers and other participants in the system.

The judge warned about the dangers of using AI, emphasizing the threat to privacy and the potential to dehumanize the law. He referred to recent incidents where an AI tool caused errors, leading lawyers to cite non-existent cases. He urged prudent and humble use of technology.

Despite other burning issues, such as the Supreme Court’s new code of ethics announced a month ago, Roberts focused solely on AI. He mentioned that several committees of the Judicial Conference are investigating the appropriate uses of AI in litigation, among other things.

She has already led the Ministry of Commerce, playing a key role in negotiations with the European Union after Brexit.

Truss replaces Dominic Raab, who after recent criticism of his role in the Afghanistan crisis will assume the Ministry of Justice, until now in the hands of Robert Buckland. Raab will also serve as deputy prime minister in this new cabinet, which would show that Johnson continues to trust him despite the controversy.

In fact, his formal appointment as ‘number two’ makes official a position that Raab had already been occupying ‘de facto’, as was evident when he assumed the Government on an interim basis while the prime minister remained admitted by Covid-19 in a hospital.

Downing Street has also confirmed other departures such as Gavin Williamson, head of Education, and Robert Jenrick, who will transfer the Housing portfolio to Michael Gove. On the other hand, they retain their positions heavyweights of the current Executive as the Minister of the Interior, Priti Patel, and the Minister of Finance, Rishi Sunak.
