The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded by the Norwegian Committee to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. The announcement was made by Jørgen Watne Frydnes, president of the committee, with moving words of recognition for the Venezuelan democratic leader.

During the announcement, the president of the Norwegian Committee explained that the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Machado “for her tireless work promoting the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”

He went on to say that this award is given to “a brave and committed defender of peace, to a woman who keeps the flame of democracy alive amid growing darkness.”

The official also stated that the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize highlights civil courage in Latin America, embodied by María Corina Machado, a key figure in the Venezuelan opposition’s fight to restore democracy to the nation.

Through social media, Machado shared her initial impressions of the award announcement, expressing her surprise at the unexpectedness of the news. She communicated with Edmundo González Urrutia, exiled in Spain, who stated: “Well-deserved recognition for the long struggle of a woman and an entire people for our freedom and democracy. Venezuela’s first Nobel Prize winner! Congratulations, María Corina Machado, Venezuela will be free!”
